Los Angeles womanizing music promoter exec Chris Bander (Ryan Reynolds), just ten years out of high school, is responsible for the musical success his insufferable pin-up ex-girlfriend, Samantha James (Anna Faris). And wishes he hadn't. She is a leech. And viscous when jilted.

Once upon a time, in high school, Chris was a "looser." Overweight and out-of-touch with the social games typical of high school life (at least according to Hollywood), Chris was not able to get past being Just Friends with the New Jersey dream girl, ex-cheerleader turned teacher and bar tender living with her parents, Jamie Palamino (Amy Smart).

Chris launches a campaign to make Jamie more than just friends. But not without spiteful competition. It is the same predictable formula, including some bitter and poisonous ingredients.

Just Friends, a PG-13 by the way, is a "consenting adults" mostly skinless sex flick for young teens with inappropriate touch, presenting of sexually immoral behavior as acceptable, a woman taking a man's pants down with unseen oral sex and many other matters of sexual immorality. What is sexually immoral? Some folks are going to hate me for this (so what else would one expect when told of the sin involved in their favorite pastime?). God's many admonitions against sexually immoral choices may be summed up as any sexual contact (including visual), conduct or activity outside of a monogamous heterosexual marriage. [1Cor. 6:18 - 20]

Just Friends is also a cussfest for young teens, at about 34 uses of some form of the three/four letter word vocabulary per hour. Just because it does not contain the most foul of the foul words does not make it fit for anyone let alone 13 year old kids. Maybe our young teens hear this kind of language vulgarity in school every day. Well? Why do you think 13 year olds talk that way? When they are saturated with such vulgarity in and as entertainment, with impunity and no consequences, it is no wonder. [Matt. 25:40, Matt. 18:10, Luke 17:2]

Just Friends is a slap in the face of God regarding honor of His name. The teen favorite three syllable sentence with God's name trailing it was rampant. And God's name with the four letter expletive was not left out. Twice. [Deut. 5:11]

And it is thick with entertainment-borne drinking and drunkenness the American College of Physicians warns us about. [Eph. 5:18] Besides all that, it is empty. Predictable. And vain.

With an investigation area score of zero in four of the six CAP investigation areas, this film is yet another example of the MPAA being morally dead who evidently think you are stupid or at lest won't notice or don't care anymore (which may be more true than we realize). [Jude 1:4] R-rated films in the comparative baseline database earned final scores of 54 and below, mostly in the forties. Just Friends earned a final score of 30, making its morality envelope raunchier than most R-rated films. Not because of the raunchiness of any individual examples of sexual immorality but because of the sheer number of "lesser" instances of assault on sexual purity and decency (See CAP Rule of 1000.

R-rated films in the comparative baseline database earned influence density scores of 0.78 to 2.04 (the higher the number the worse the density of assaults on morality and ethics). Just Friends earned an influence density of 2.68.

There is no doubt of the "ratings creep" Harvard University proved four years after we did. I dearly wish someone would fund us if for no other reason than to compile and continue our massive research data. [Ps. 12:8]

As always, the objective listing of directly observed findings in the Findings/Scoring section is the best source of information that might put you in a better position to make an informed moral decision on your own whether this film is fit for your young teens.

CHAPTER/VERSE

  • 1Cor. 6:18 - 20 Flee from sexual immorality. All other sins a man commits are outside his body, but he who sins sexually sins against his own body. Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your body.
  • Matt. 25:40 And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.
  • Matt. 18:10 Take heed that ye despise not one of these little ones; for I say unto you, That in heaven their angels do always behold the face of my Father which is in heaven. ["Despise" is kataphroneo {kat-af-ron-eh'-o}: 1) to condemn, despise, disdain, think little or nothing of, to look down upon (which includes abuse, even by influence and lying to them)]
  • Deut. 5:11 Thou shalt not take the name of the LORD thy God in vain: for the LORD will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain. [Vain is shav' {shawv}: emptiness, nothingness, vanity, such as an expletive. With or without the four letter expletive, the use of God's name in any way other than respect, reverence or thoughtful discussion is in vain. That includes the popular three syllable sentence with His name trailing it AND the misuse of Jesus' name.]
  • Eph. 5:18 Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit. ["Wine" can be any intoxicating substance including illegal drugs or abuse of prescription drugs. This issue is do not get drunk. Though it is not a sin to drink, it is a sin to get drunk OR to influence to get drunk or to drink in defiance. A study by the American College of Physicians (ACP) has found an undeniable link between the presentation of alcoholic beverages and tobacco in and as entertainment and abuse of them by adolescents. And teaching/causing youth to abuse alcohol/tobacco (or drugs) by emboldening youth with them in and as entertainment invokes Luke 17:2. If alcoholic beverages in entertainment were not a problem for our young, why would there be and why has there been such a push to get and keep booze commercials off prime time broadcast TV?]

***Selected Scriptures of Armour against the influence of the entertainment industry***
  • Ps. 12:8 The wicked freely strut about when what is vile is honored among men [e.g., create progressively vile/offensive entertainment with impunity and no consequences to younger and younger audiences every year when enough people continue to defend it, embrace it, pay for it, enjoy it, want it].
  • Col. 2:8 Beware lest any man [by his influence] spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ.
  • 1 Cor. 15:33 Be not deceived: evil communications corrupt good manners.
  • Rom. 5:19 For as by one man's disobedience many were made sinners, so by the obedience of one shall many be made righteous.
  • Jude 1:4 For there are certain men* crept in unawares [secretly slipped in among you], who were before of old ordained to this condemnation [whose condemnation was written about long ago], ungodly men, turning the grace of our God into lasciviousness [a license for immorality], and denying the only Lord God, and our Lord Jesus Christ. [*men: anthropos {anth'-ro-pos}, generic, a human being, whether male or female]
  • Matt. 25:40 And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto [or for] one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto [or for] me.
  • Luke 17:2 It were better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck, and he cast into the sea, than that he should offend one of these little ones. ["Offend": skandalizo - to entice to sin; to cause a person to begin to distrust and desert one whom he ought to trust and obey; to cause to fall away. "Little ones": mikros - little;, small of age; younger which can include at-home teens].
  • Ps. 119:133 Order my steps in thy word: and let not any iniquity have dominion over me [let no sin rule over me].
  • John 14:15 If ye love me, keep my commandments.
  • 1 Thess. 5:22 Abstain from all appearance of evil. ["Evil" includes all things that are sinful.]

There are some in the entertainment industry who maintain that 1) violent programming is harmless because no studies exist that prove a connection between violent entertainment and aggressive behavior in children, and 2) young people know that television, movies, and video games are simply fantasy. Unfortunately, they are wrong on both accounts." And "Viewing violence may lead to real life violence." I applaud these associations for fortifying 1 Cor. 15:33. Read the rest of the story. From our more than eight years of study, I contend that other aberrant behaviors, attitudes, and expressions can be inserted in place of "violence" in that statement. Our Director - Child Psychology Support, a licensed psychologist and certified school psychologist concurs. For example, "Viewing arrogance against fair authority may lead to your kids defying you in real life." Or "Viewing sex may lead to sex in real life." Likewise and especially with impudence, hate and foul language. I further contend that any positive behavior can be inserted in place of "violence" with the same chance or likelihood of being a behavior template for the observer; of being incorporated into the behavior mechanics and/or coping skills of the observer. In choosing your entertainment, please consider carefully the "rest of the story" and our findings.
