Cody Banks (Frankie Muniz - Agent Cody Banks, Agent Cody Banks 2) has competition in Alex Rider (Alex Pettyfer). Both are conscripted into action-filled, potentially devastating espionage and both are adolescents. While Pettyfer is a little less talented than Muniz, Pettyfer has a better attitude than Muniz ... doesn't have as much of the fed-up, "It ain't good enough no mater what 'it' is" and deceitful attitude against his parents, especially since Alex has none in Stormbreaker. All Alex has is his always-absent guardian and provider uncle Ian (Ewan McGregor) and his housekeeper/nanny, Jack Starbright (Alicia Silverstone). Jack!? Go figure.

Secret Service agents Alan Blunt (Bill Nighy) and Mrs. Jones ... just "Mrs. Jones" (Sophie Okonedo) pull on Alex's 14 year old sense of duty, patriotism and teenage immunity to draw him into dangerous spy work, just like his uncle. But wait! Uncle Ian a spy? Alex had no idea he was. Ian was enough of a spy that, after a number of attempts on his life and after snuffing out a couple lives with rockets, a bad guy hangs upside down on a rope from a helicopter to kill him. Eventually many things that happened to Alex in his short life begin to come together to make a bigger picture -- he was being groomed by Uncle Ian to join in the spy world when he was old enough. I guess 14 is old enough. At least to Blunt and Jones and at least in the movies.

An evil and most dastardly plan is about to hatch. Darrius Sayle (Mickey Rourke), an old school mate of and subject of adolescent torment by the now Prime Minister (Robbie Coltrane) and others, has invented a new and revolutionary computer that promises to be the computer to end all computers -- the Stormbreaker. A contest is launched to find the best computer nerd to challenge the Stormbreaker. Once one is found Alex takes over his identity to infiltrate the Sayle network. That was a major feat in and of itself since Alex knows nothing about computers and has two weeks to learn as much as the nerd.

Along with cohort in crime Nadia Vole (Missi Pyle), Sayle woos and pampers Alex as he tests the Stormbreaker that indeed does promise to be revolutionary. So revolutionary that Sayle placed a computer in all elementary classrooms (much like a Presidential candidate wanted to do but for a different reason -- maybe?). But little did Alex and the Secret Service know until almost too late the Stormbreaker has been placed in the schools for a vile purpose that will change the life of every student.

The activation of the Stormbreaker computers is to be done simultaneously in every classroom. System-wide activation of the computers is to be accomplished by a special single button that activates the all the computers everywhere. In this case, the Prime Minister is chosen to press the celebratory button. Why would Sayle want to distribute computers to all the elementary schools? Let me just say he was seeking revenge against those who tormented him during his elementary school years by assaulting the progeny of they who tormented him; they who had nothing to do with his misery gone by. History repeats itself.

Except for the content revealed by the Wanton Violence/Crime (W) and the Sexual Immorality (S) investigation areas, content was found to be equivalent to G-rated films in the comparative baseline database. But the content in those two areas blows this film out of the water.

Wanton Violence/Crime (W)
Unfortunately, Alex Rider: Operation Stormbreaker is definitely R-equivalent in content revealed by the Wanton Violence/Crime (W) investigation area, thus the reason for the red CAPCon Alert light. Double killing by rocket. Gunfire to kill, repeatedly. Firearm threat to the face. Death by a stinging animal. Attempted murder of a child. Attempted mass murder of children. More.

The American Medical Association, the American Psychological Association, the American Academy of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry and the American Academy of Pediatrics have jointly found:
"Viewing violence may lead to real life violence. Children [which includes at-home teens] exposed to violent programming at a young age have a higher tendency for violent and aggressive behavior later in life than children who are not so exposed."
And I would say that watching a bad guy coldly pump lead into a man for making an equipment operation fumble would be "viewing violence."

The report goes on to say:
Children who see a lot of violence are more likely to view violence as an effective way of settling conflicts. Children exposed to violence are more likely to assume the acts of violence are acceptable behavior."
See Joint Statement on the Impact of Entertainment Violence on Children Congressional Public Health Summit for more unsettling truth about modern entertainment.

It seems the health professionals are becoming more and more in agreement with God's Word. [Prov. 16:29, 1 Cor. 15:33]

Impudence/Hate (I)
Not one use of the three/four letter word vocabulary was noted. Issues of hatred were submerged in acts of violence so demonstrations of hatred were incorporated along with the violence in Wanton Violence/Crime. Duplicate incorporation of a behavior into two or more investigations areas is not permitted by the CAP analysis model.

Sexual Immorality (S)
I read a secular review of this film that was written to inform or parents that said "...no sexual content -- as this junior Bond isn't even provided with a love interest." No sexual content!? I wonder whose standards the writer used to say "no sexual content?" In one scene Alex and his teen heartthrob (love interest?) dressed in tight-fitting clothing ride on a horse to escape their would-be captors. She is in the saddle with he behind her and his arms around her just under -- and sometimes touching -- her clothed breasts as she and he bounce, sometimes with his right thumb touching her left breast. Inappropriate touch of gender-specific body parts is not "sexual?" [Mark 7:21] Don't be fooled by seemingly innocent choreography such as this [2 Tim. 2:16, Col. 2:8]. Filmmakers know exactly what goes on in every single frame. And Pettyfer knew what he was doing. So did the girl. And what about the innuendo, the "gay" reference, the use of a woman as a toy/ornament, the dressing to maximize the female form and/or skin exposure, etc?

Stormbreaker is clearly equivalent in "sexual content" to some PG-13 films, not in boldness or extremeness of any specific example of sexually immoral behavior but in the number of examples. See CAP Rule of 1000 for more information on this relatively new Hollywood device. [Ps. 12:8, Jude 1:4]

Drugs/Alcohol (D)
The only matters of alcohol, illegal drugs or abuse of prescription drugs noted by this investigation area are the appearance of an alcoholic beverage and a cigar. There is no drinking and I don't think the cigar is lit but there are booze and a smoking item at any rate. [Rom. 5:19]

Offense to God (O)
The only instance found in this investigation area is the matter of Sayle trying to get revenge. [Rom. 12:19] God's name was not noted as being used even once whether with or without the four letter expletive. No witchcraft, sorcery, demonism, cultism, occultism or other unholy presences were noted either.

Murder/Suicide (M)
There are two murders in Stormbreaker. Both by gunfire. One rather graphic CGI portrayal with bullets slo-mo through the air at the camera plus one very callous murder of someone for fumbling the operation of a forklift. [Rev. 22:15]

CHAPTER/VERSE

  • Prov. 16:29 A violent man entices his neighbor and leads him down a path that is not good. [The issue is the violence. "A violent man" can be a man, woman OR the men/women/character demonstrating the violent behavior/action on the screen. Now you know why violence, especially in and as entertainment, can embolden the viewer into aggression, especially youth. See also "Joint Statement on the Impact of Entertainment Violence on Children Congressional Public Health Summit" . Further, God speaks darkly of violence 56 times in the Old and New Testament of the KJV.]
  • Mark 7:21 For from within, out of men's hearts, come evil thoughts, sexual immorality, theft, murder, adultery,
  • 2 Tim. 2:16 But shun profane and vain babblings [which do not have to be audible]: for they will increase unto more ungodliness.
  • Rom. 5:19 For just as through the disobedience of the one man the many were made sinners, ... [Though only one influential example might not seem significant enough to lead the many into practicing a sin, bondage to sin begins with the first one.]
  • Rom. 12:19 Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rather give place unto wrath: for it is written, Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord
  • Rev. 22:15 Outside [of Heaven] are the dogs, those [unforgiven] who practice magic arts, the sexually immoral, the murderers, the idolaters and everyone who loves and practices falsehood.

***Selected Scriptures of Armour against the influence of the entertainment industry***
  • Ps. 12:8 The wicked freely strut about [e.g., create progressively vile/offensive entertainment with impunity and no consequences and present it to younger and younger audiences every year] when what is vile is honored among men [when enough people continue to defend it, embrace it, pay for it, enjoy it, want it, submit to it. I call attention to Ps. 12:8 to warn of the creeping desensitizing power of "entertainment."]
  • Col. 2:8 Beware lest any man [by his influence] spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ.
  • 1 Cor. 15:33 Be not deceived: evil [kakov: of a bad nature, not such as it ought to be] communications corrupt good manners.
  • Rom. 5:19 For as by one man's disobedience many were made sinners, so by the obedience of one shall many be made righteous.
  • Jude 1:4 For there are certain men* crept in unawares [secretly slipped in among us], who were before of old ordained to this condemnation [whose condemnation was written about long ago], ungodly men, turning the grace of our God into lasciviousness [a license for immorality], and denying the only Lord God, and our Lord Jesus Christ. [*men: anthropos {anth'-ro-pos}, generic, a human being, whether male or female]
  • Matt. 25:40 And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.
  • Luke 17:2 It were better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck, and he cast into the sea, than that he should offend one of these little ones. [Offend: skandalizo {skan-dal-id'-zo} - scandalize; to entice to sin; to cause a person to begin to distrust and desert one whom he ought to trust and obey; to cause to fall away.]
  • Ps. 119:133 Order my steps in thy word: and let not any iniquity have dominion over me [let no sin rule over me].
  • John 14:15 If ye love me, keep my commandments.
  • 1 Thess. 5:22 Abstain from all appearance of evil. ["Evil" includes all things that are sinful.]

There are some in the entertainment industry who maintain that 1) violent programming is harmless because no studies exist that prove a connection between violent entertainment and aggressive behavior in children, and 2) young people know that television, movies, and video games are simply fantasy. Unfortunately, they are wrong on both accounts." And "Viewing violence may lead to real life violence." I applaud these associations for fortifying 1 Cor. 15:33. Read the rest of the story. From our more than eight years of study, I contend that other aberrant behaviors, attitudes, and expressions can be inserted in place of "violence" in that statement. Our Director - Child Psychology Support, a licensed psychologist and certified school psychologist concurs. For example, "Viewing arrogance against fair authority may lead to your kids defying you in real life." Or "Viewing sex may lead to sex in real life." Likewise and especially with impudence, hate and foul language. I further contend that any positive behavior can be inserted in place of "violence" with the same chance or likelihood of being a behavior template for the observer; of being incorporated into the behavior mechanics and/or coping skills of the observer. In choosing your entertainment, please consider carefully the "rest of the story" and our findings.
