xXx: State of the Union is a powerful film if only in terms of the excitement created by the audio behind the action. Some of the most realistic sounds of explosions and exploding devices I have ever heard came thundering from the speakers. But in terms of assaults on morality and wholesomeness, xXx: State of the Union was at the bottom of the barrel with an investigation area score of zero in each of Wanton Violence/Crime (W), Impudence/Hate (I) and Murder/Suicide (M).

Verification and validation of the CAP analysis model and establishment of its comparative baseline database was performed by actual use on films. R-rated films in the comparative baseline database consistently (indeed without fail) earned CAP final scores of 54 and below out of 100 (100 is best). R-rated films in the comparative baseline database earned CAP influence density (ID) figures from 0.89 to 2.04 (zero is best).

The Specialist (1994) was one of the films analyzed during the verification and validation of the CAP analysis model and the formation of its comparative baseline database. Under identical analysis parameters and methodology:

THE SPECIALIST (1994) xXx: STATE OF THE UNION
Final Score: 25 Final Score: 21 (more severe)
Infleunce Density: 2.04 Influence Density: 2.62 (more severe)
Rated R Rated PG-13 (LESS severe)

What is wrong with this picutre? It is good that Harvard University has agreed with us regarding the MPAA rating system even though their agreement came four years after our finding our finding.

I am sorry but Ice Cube, though a talent in his own right, is not the bad guy image. He just doesn't cut it as a bad guy. Vin Diesel in the first xXx made a better "bad guy" than Ice Cube.

The story opens with a massive assault on NSAs underground xXx facility by military assailants from our own soil. In a pyrotechnic and explosion display of murderous assault not likely equaled, 16 NSA agents are murdered and a number of the assailants are killed as well.

Secretary of Defense General George Deckert (Willem DaFoe), the mastermind of the assault on the xXx complex, is a bigger threat to the Union than foreign powers. Deckert launched an assassination attempt on President James Sanford (Peter Strauss) because of his trending toward less spending on defense. Assassination of the President during a State of the Union address, along with the others in the succession for president who would each be present, would leave Deckert as President.

Discovering this, Captain Augustus Eugene Gibbons (Samuel L. Jackson), back from the first xXx and now head of the NSA's xXx force, drafts Lieutenant Darius Trey "I don't blend" Stone (Ice Cube) out of prison to be the new xXx, an unequaled undercover agent who operates above the law. Gibbons drafts Stone by springing him out of prison, there for a crime for which he took an eight-year rap that should have been laid on Gibbons. Gibbons and Stone were not the best of friends to say the least. A trend does seem to be forming in xXx -- that of using hardened criminals for governmental assault maneuvers.

Reluctantly agreeing to aid Gibbons, Stone drafts a group of "hustlers and thieves" from his less-than-admirable past to aid in the assault planned to thwart Deckert and to save the President. This is another case of using ignoble deeds to achieve a noble end. Too bad a noble destination does not excuse an ignoble path.

The Wanton Violence/Crime investigation area found much gunfire to kill, many firearm threats, and a number of defensive killings. Severe beatings rounded out the zero in the score for this area. [Gen. 6:13]

The 26 uses of foul language included one use of the most foul of the foul words. Together they drained the starting 100 points in Impudence/Hate to zero. [Eccl. 5:2, Col. 3:8]

Sexually immoral behaviors were limited mainly to innuendo excessive cleavage and an offer of sex with a number of instances of dressing to maximize the female form and/or skin exposure. [Eph. 5:3] No one got in bed with anyone and, except for breast exposure exhibited by excessive cleavage, no nudity of any kind was noted.

Drug/Alcohol included numerous uses of alcoholic beverages and smoking [Eph. 5:18] but no illegal drugs and no involvement of children with drugs of any kind.

Offense to God found six uses of God's name in vain with four of them including the four letter expletive [Deut. 5:11] but no examples of Satanism, occultism, witchcraft, sorcery or demonism of any kind.

Murder/Suicide revealed many murders by gunfire, by explosion, by blade, by incineration .... [Gal. 5:21]

The listing in the findings/Scoring section is the best place to find the full accounting of findings about the content of this film.

CHAPTER/VERSE

  • Gen. 6:13 So God said to Noah, "I am going to put an end to all people, for the earth is filled with violence because of them. I am surely going to destroy both them and the earth. [That rather says a lot about how God feels about violence.]
  • Eccl. 5:2 Be not rash with thy mouth, and let not thine heart be hasty to utter any thing [rash or vile] before God [who is omnipresent]: ...
  • Col. 3:8 But now you must rid yourselves of all such things as these: anger, rage, malice, slander, and filthy language from your lips.
  • Eph. 5:3 But among you there must not be even a hint of sexual immorality, or of any kind of impurity, or of greed, because these are improper for God's holy people.
  • Eph. 5:18 Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit. ["Wine" can be any intoxicating substance. Though it is not a sin to drink, it is a sin to get drunk OR to influence to get drunk or to drink in defiance. A recent study http://www.acponline.org/journals/ecp/janfeb02/dalton.pdf has found an undeniable link between the presentation of alcoholic beverages and tobacco in and as entertainment and abuse of them by adolescents. And teaching/causing youth to abuse alcohol/tobacco by emboldening youth with them in and as entertainment invokes Luke 17:2]
  • Deut. 5:11 Thou shalt not take the name of the LORD thy God in vain: for the LORD will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain. [Vain is shav' {shawv}: emptiness, nothingness, vanity, such as an expletive. With or without the four letter expletive, the use of God's name in any way other than respect, reverence or thoughtful discussion is in vain. That includes the popular three syllable sentence with His name trailing it AND the misuse of Jesus' name.]
  • Gal. 5:21 Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things [who are unforgiven] shall not inherit the kingdom of God.

***Selected Scriptures of Armour against the influence of the entertainment industry***
  • Ps. 12:8 The wicked freely strut about [e.g., create progressively vile/offensive entertainment with impunity and no consequences to younger and younger audiences every year] when what is vile is honored among men [when enough people continue to defend it, embrace it, pay for it, enjoy it, want it, submit to it].
  • Col. 2:8 Beware lest any man [by his influence] spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ.
  • 1 Cor. 15:33 Be not deceived: evil communications corrupt good manners.
  • Rom. 5:19 For as by one man's disobedience many were made sinners, so by the obedience of one shall many be made righteous.
  • Jude 1:4 For there are certain men* crept in unawares [secretly slipped in among you], who were before of old ordained to this condemnation [whose condemnation was written about long ago], ungodly men, turning the grace of our God into lasciviousness [a license for immorality], and denying the only Lord God, and our Lord Jesus Christ. [*men: anthropos {anth'-ro-pos}, generic, a human being, whether male or female]
  • Matt. 25:40 And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto [or for] one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto [or for] me.
  • Luke 17:2 It were better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck, and he cast into the sea, than that he should offend one of these little ones. ["Offend": skandalizo - to entice to sin; to cause a person to begin to distrust and desert one whom he ought to trust and obey; to cause to fall away. "Little ones": mikros - little;, small of age; younger which can include at-home teens].
  • Ps. 119:133 Order my steps in thy word: and let not any iniquity have dominion over me [let no sin rule over me].
  • John 14:15 If ye love me, keep my commandments.
  • 1 Thess. 5:22 Abstain from all appearance of evil. ["Evil" includes all things that are sinful.]

There are some in the entertainment industry who maintain that 1) violent programming is harmless because no studies exist that prove a connection between violent entertainment and aggressive behavior in children, and 2) young people know that television, movies, and video games are simply fantasy. Unfortunately, they are wrong on both accounts." And "Viewing violence may lead to real life violence." I applaud these associations for fortifying 1 Cor. 15:33. Read the rest of the story. From our more than eight years of study, I contend that other aberrant behaviors, attitudes, and expressions can be inserted in place of "violence" in that statement. Our Director - Child Psychology Support, a licensed psychologist and certified school psychologist concurs. For example, "Viewing arrogance against fair authority may lead to your kids defying you in real life." Or "Viewing sex may lead to sex in real life." Likewise and especially with impudence, hate and foul language. I further contend that any positive behavior can be inserted in place of "violence" with the same chance or likelihood of being a behavior template for the observer; of being incorporated into the behavior mechanics and/or coping skills of the observer. In choosing your entertainment, please consider carefully the "rest of the story" and our findings.
