SUBJECT The 4.33-minute We Are Family: A Musical Message for All video has been shipped to 61,000 public schools across America. Claims have been noted that the video, however subliminally, promotes and/or suggests the practice of homosexuality as a legitimate element of the family, e.g., same-gender parents. Because of the claims, we have analyzed the video for the Christian Educators Association International (CEAI) to reveal any such content for Christian teachers, parents and school administrators that they might be in a better position to make a moral decision whether the video is fit for the target audience of pre-K to 6th grade. METHODOLOGY The We Are Family video was treated as any other vehicle of audio-visual communication. The same analysis model was used on the We Are Family video that has been used successfully for over ten years in the analysis of each of the nearly 1000 films so far in our archive -- the same model which revealed a trend that was echoed by Harvard University four years after our finding. The CAP analysis model is ideally suited for this task since the model is applicable to any system or vehicle which imparts information to an observer which requires the observer to learn, to form an opinion, or which elicits emotion(s) or value judgment(s) in the observer. A description of the CAP analysis model is available in CAP Methodology. SCORING Of 600 total points across the six CAP investigation areas (see CAP Methodology above), only one point was lost in only one investigation area -- in Sexual Immorality. The content that required the loss of that single point was exposure of an excessive portion of a human female breast. As the result of that scene the We Are Family video earned a final score of 87, placing it at the bottom of the scoring range earned by G-rated movies (100 to 87 out of 100) in the comparative baseline database. The We Are Family video is equivalent to "hardcore" G-rated entertainment programming. OBSERVATIONS/DISCUSSION The Teacher's Guide that accompanies the DVD is, however, perfectly suited to inject matters of homosexuality into the total presentation. Presenters who practice homosexuality or are sympathetic with the homosexual movement will find in the Teacher's Guide ample opportunity to extend the video and pave the way for secondary discussions about homosexual practitioners in the family. Adoptions and foster care by "gay" practitioners might be another place "gay" and "gay" sympathetic teachers could go with the Teacher's Guide. The Teacher's Guide was developed by the Anti-Defamation League (ADL). From a scan of the ADL website and linked pages many uses of "bigotry", "diversity", "prejudice" and other terms often used by the homosexual agenda and its spin doctors were found, thus opening the door to the implication of their promotion and support of the homosexual agenda. However, a statement made on ADL's Focus on Hate Crimes page removes all doubt:
One of the song verses in this video is "Everyone can see we are together when we walk on by." Another verse is "All of the people around us, they say 'Can they be that close?'" These verses might be envisioned by adults who are so predisposed as addressing homosexual bonding. But the verses can just as easily suggest platonic friendship under diversity due to cultural, racial, national or ethnic differences. The verses can, as intended, easily fit into the noble theme of the "multi-species" song, We Are Family of 1979 to "call for tolerance and healing on a global basis" -- to call on a global community -- "family" -- rather than focusing on or even addressing a select few. FINDING It is our finding that the We Are Family: A Musical Message for All video, when used as a stand-alone tool, contains nothing to indoctrinate viewers in or introduce any matter of the practice of homosexuality. If the target audience of pre-K to 6th grade are taken into discussions of "two mommies" or "two daddies" or any other matter of the practice of homosexuality the educator/facilitator will have to take them there. The video cannot get there on its own. However, the Teacher's Guide, when presented by autonomous homosexual practitioners or those who are sympathetic to such practice, provides ample opportunity to pave the way for introducing such matters into the guided presentation. ---------------------- * "Man" in this context is generic. That which is sexually sinful for a man is sexually sinful for a woman as well. COMMENT: While we each must be compassionate and loving of the one who chooses to practice homosexuality, we do not have to accept the act. If your child disobeys, do you hate the child or rather his/her act of disobedience? The one who chooses to practice homosexuality is as precious to Jesus as you or I. It is some of our behaviors He hates. Practicing homosexuality is one of them. Just one. If Jesus hated the sinner He would hate us all. While we must be gentle, we do not have to change ourselves or compromise our faith or God's Truth to soothe the feelings they who choose to violate His Word by practicing homosexuality, not even our own feelings as we violate His Word in other ways. We do not have to accept the sin to accept the sinner. We do not have to tolerate the sin to tolerate the sinner. Nor do we have to embrace the sin to embrace the sinner. Nor do we have to practice the sin to reach the sinner. To do so is being closed minded to His Word in favor of the world. Jesus never demonstrated sin or participated in it or encouraged us to sin to teach us about it. And Jesus never preached the evils of sin by joining us sinners in our sin. He mingled with us as we sinned but He never joined us in our sin. He was never afraid to call a sin a sin or a sinner a sinner. Neither do we "Davids" have to cower under the might of the "Goliath" government trying to force us to acquiesce and shelve our faith to appease the very few. And for those of you who are aware of the "God hates 'fags'" Westboro Baptist Church and its pastor Fred Phelps, know that God does NOT hate "fags" no matter what Phelps says. God hates, and rigtheously so, the practice, not the practitioner. |

| There are some in the entertainment industry who maintain that 1) violent programming is harmless because no studies exist that prove a connection between violent entertainment and aggressive behavior in children, and 2) young people know that television, movies, and video games are simply fantasy. Unfortunately, they are wrong on both accounts." And "Viewing violence may lead to real life violence." I applaud these associations for fortifying 1 Cor. 15:33. Read the rest of the story. From our more than eight years of study, I contend that other aberrant behaviors, attitudes, and expressions can be inserted in place of "violence" in that statement. Our Director - Child Psychology Support, a licensed psychologist and certified school psychologist concurs. For example, "Viewing arrogance against fair authority may lead to your kids defying you in real life." Or "Viewing sex may lead to sex in real life." Likewise and especially with impudence, hate and foul language. I further contend that any positive behavior can be inserted in place of "violence" with the same chance or likelihood of being a behavior template for the observer; of being incorporated into the behavior mechanics and/or coping skills of the observer. In choosing your entertainment, please consider carefully the "rest of the story" and our findings. |
