EXECUTIVE SUMMARY / COMMENTARY:

"Life" (R, 1999) -- too bad. Eddie Murphy and "Grady" are genius at comedy. Too bad the movie soon lost being a comedy. In just a few minutes someone spoke the most foul of foul words PLUS God's name in vain with the four letter expletive. This is analysis of the first 56-minutes of the movie.

Two men from New York, transporting illegal booze to Mississippi, were falsely accused of murdering a man. Actually, the police murdered the elderly professional gambler by beating him because he had not left town as ordered, but since the two New Yorkers stumbled on the body -- planted by the dirty cops to implicate anyone who found the body -- they were accused of the crime. The judge gave them both life in prison -- a Mississippi prison of the 1930s.

Booze, cussing, more cussing, some brutality, and bloody murder by police. That's the first 56 minutes, anyway. And a couple homosexual suggestions. That's about all I can say about the movie.

FINDINGS / SCORING: Life (1999) CAP Thermometers

NOTE: Multiple occurrences of each item described below are likely.

Wanton Violence/Crime (W):
  • strong-arming
  • police brutality
  • prison yard justice

    Impudence/Hate (I)(1):
  • 36 uses of the most foul of the foul words
  • racial discrimination
  • 8 uses of a derogatory ethnic term

    Sex/Homosexuality (S):
  • homosexual suggestion/innuendo
  • suggestive eye movement
  • implication of immoral sex (conjugal visit with non-wife while in prison)

    Drugs/Alcohol (D):
  • booze
  • bar and drinking

    Offense to God (O)(2):
  • 4 uses of God's name in vain with the four letter expletive

    Murder/Suicide (M)(3):
  • bloody murder

    (1) As noted in CAP Special Report-001, "Investigation Area and Scoring Trend," of the six CAP Investigation Areas, Impudence/Hate was the strongest presence in all four movie classifications. It has a strong revelation about the entertainment media.

    (2) The use of the three/four letter word vocabulary without God's name is incorporated into the Impudence/Hate Investigation Area. The use of God's name with or without the three/four letter word vocabulary is incorporated into the Offense to God Investigation Area. There is no duplication. As required of the Holy Scriptures, unless God's name is used with reverence to His glory and praise, its use is considered in vain, whether literal or euphemistic.

    (3) Only portrayal of successful murder or suicide are incorporated into Murder/Suicide. Presentation of attempts to commit murder or suicide and deaths by police action or war are incorporated into Wanton Violence/Crime.
