If you remember soylent green, you might have a good "taste" of this film. In the year 2019, Lincoln 6 Echo (Ewan McGregor) lives an idyllic life of no needs. Everything is laid out for him in a perfectly controlled environment compound. The world has become contaminated and all life has been destroyed except for they in the safe haven in which 6 Echo and hundreds of others like him live. Everyone lives an unquestioned regimented and sterile life where all wear the same aseptically white and gray uniform. All are quite safe from the killer contamination outside. There is no life outside the compound ... except on a single island. Living on the island is living in paradise. Everyone wants to get out of the compound and live on the island but only those selected by lottery get to go to the island. As you contemplate watching this psychological action film, try to answer the question: does a clone have a soul? One day, Lincoln 6 Echo begins to question. Why are we here? Why do I have to live such a regulated life. Why can't I have bacon with breakfast? Why do I have to wear the same clothes as everyone else? Why can't I touch Jordan 2 Delta (Scarlett Johansson)? Lincoln's relationship with Jordan leads her out of safety into the same swirling sludge of defiance he feels. Lincoln convinces Jordan to fight the system with him and try to escape. Death may be better than life like this. Through a cascade of spy-like maneuvers, Lincoln and Jordan find themselves in the Arizona desert. At the helm of the compound is Dr. Merrick (Sean Bean), corporate head of the survival compound and chief father to all. The safe haven compound is Merrick's brainchild. Supporting cast includes Djimon Hounsou who changes heart at just the right time. Steve Buscemi plays McCord, a key role as the one who keeps all the behind-the-walls and under-the-floor machines and systems running. Buscemi also plays a key link between the Lincoln-Jordan team with the world above. And the gentle giant of The Green Mile, Michael Clarke Duncan as Starkweather demonstrates some atypical talents to give this story a sense of broadness. While this film could be an excellent Saturday night popcorn flick, it presents some issues of assault on morality and ethics. The Island unfortunately earned a R-13 score of 47 out of 100. Only one of the six CAP investigation areas, Wanton Violence/Crime (W), revealed enough programming to warrant loss of all its 100 starting points. Director Bay is quite generous with traffic mayhem, assaults and killing. [Prov. 13:2, Jonah 3:8, Prov. 3:31-32] While The Island is clearly not as bad with foul language as many PG-13 movies, the nine uses of the three/four letter word vocabulary plus the one use of the most foul of the foul words plus some other issues of impudence were expensive to the Impudence/Hate score (I). [Col. 3:8, Prov. 22:11] Yes, there was a scene of intercourse in this film for the age stratum least capable of managing such fires: for they who are least prepared to say "No!" No private parts were seen except that revealed by underwear, which was quite enough in her case, but it is obvious what McGregor and Johansson were portraying. That and other issues such as showing of skin far below the navel, sensuous dance, a woman as a toy and other sexually oriented issues drained two-thirds of the Sexual Immorality (S) score. [Mark 7:20 - 23, Rev. 21:8] Drugs/Alcohol (D) content consisted only of drinking, but displaying drinking in and as entertainment has been proven by the American College of Physicians to be a seriously corruptive influence on adolescent viewers. [Eph. 5:18, Gal. 5:21] The Offense to God (O) investigation area found not only a number of uses of God's name in vain, it found some philosophy and "strange teachings" clearly to challenge or deny God's Word [Col. 2:8, Hebr. 13:9]. Bay was also liberal with murder, thus draining the starting 100 points in Murder/Suicide (M) more than 50%. [Gal. 5:21] "... does a clone have a soul?" If cloning ever happens with humans, I believe yes. Take for instance perfectly identical twins. Do they usually end up identical in character, personality, hopes, dreams, behavior management, decision-making skills or any other trait that makes each of us an individual? I believe the soul of a clone would not be a duplicate of the host: that it would be a separate and distinct soul because it would be from God not from the host. I further believe that at the moment life starts a soul is born, including when an egg and sperm unite. Does a clone have a soul? A perplexing question indeed, as yet with no empirical answer. | There are some in the entertainment industry who maintain that 1) violent programming is harmless because no studies exist that prove a connection between violent entertainment and aggressive behavior in children, and 2) young people know that television, movies, and video games are simply fantasy. Unfortunately, they are wrong on both accounts." And "Viewing violence may lead to real life violence." I applaud these associations for fortifying 1 Cor. 15:33. Read the rest of the story. From our more than eight years of study, I contend that other aberrant behaviors, attitudes, and expressions can be inserted in place of "violence" in that statement. Our Director - Child Psychology Support, a licensed psychologist and certified school psychologist concurs. For example, "Viewing arrogance against fair authority may lead to your kids defying you in real life." Or "Viewing sex may lead to sex in real life." Likewise and especially with impudence, hate and foul language. I further contend that any positive behavior can be inserted in place of "violence" with the same chance or likelihood of being a behavior template for the observer; of being incorporated into the behavior mechanics and/or coping skills of the observer. In choosing your entertainment, please consider carefully the "rest of the story" and our findings. |
