SUMMARY / COMMENTARY:

No violence, no murder, no suicide, none of the most foul of foul words. God's name is used in vain unfortunately, but at least without the four letter expletive. Only five examples of the three/four letter word vocabulary. But there is nudity -- brief nudity as a nude woman gets out of a bed from what looks to be twenty feet away. A man was in the bed, too but he was copmpletely covered. While nothing of the man was shown and there were no motions and no contact, the optics of this scene were clear. There is also quite a bit of lying with some coaching to lie, extortion/blackmail, drinking, and lesser sexual material such as a man and a woman in bed together, inappropriate touch, and adult underwear.

*An Ideal Husband* is an artsy story of some illegal dealings which made a man rich and an old flame of the man extorts and blackmails him. It is a drama comedy set in London in 1895 with all the pomp and ceremony accorded the rich and famous of London at the opening of this century. Intellect and experience are necessary to follow the story and to understand the different dialect of the Londoners. The little tykes will not likely understand or enjoy it, but mom and dad should. This makes the movie a real good example of an adult show -- "adult" not necessarily because the kids should not see it but because they would not likely understand or enjoy it. Besides, the 'stuff' that makes adult movies "adult" does not make you an adult; programming that requires a mature audience does not make you mature.

FINDINGS / SCORING: An Ideal Husband (1999) CAP Thermometers

Wanton Violence/Crime (W):

    Impudence/Hate (I)(1):
  • 5 uses of the three/four letter word vocabulary
  • arrogance against father
  • extortion and blackmail
  • lies to deflect accountability, to hide presence, and to protect
  • coaching to lie

    Sex/Homosexuality (S):
  • brief nudity
  • man and woman in bed together
  • adult underwear
  • cleavage
  • sexual suggestion with invitation
  • suggestive eye movement
  • statue nudity
  • steam house dress
  • inappropriate touch

    Drugs/Alcohol (D):
  • booze, drinking
  • drinking to ease sorrows and to calm

    Offense to God (O)(2):
  • 3 uses of God's name in vain without the four letter expletive

    Murder/Suicide (M)(3):
  • none noted

    (1) As noted in CAP Special Report-001, "Investigation Area and Scoring Trend," of the six CAP Investigation Areas, Impudence/Hate was the strongest presence in all four movie classifications. It has a strong revelation about the entertainment media.

    (2) The use of the three/four letter word vocabulary without God's name in vain is incorporated into the Impudence/Hate Investigation Area. The use of God's name with or without the four letter expletive is incorporated into the Offense to God Investigation Area. There is no duplication. As required of the Holy Scriptures, unless God's name is used with reverence to His glory and praise, its use is considered in vain.

    (3) Only portrayal of successful murder or suicide are incorporated into Murder/Suicide. Portrayal of attempts to commit murder or suicide and deaths by police action or war are incorporated into Wanton Violence/Crime.
