SUMMARY / COMMENTARY:

*For Love of the Game* (PG-13) -- a truly adult movie.

*For Love of the Game* is an adult movie not only because of the ignominy in it (as if that should be fit for even adults), young-uns would not understand this movie. Many early and mid-teen children might incorporate poor behavior choices from it because of the promotion of freedom from authority, especially in the long-term cohabitation without commitment.

However touching a movie this might be, it is still negatively influential for the impressionable and hyper-susceptible -- a good example of Hollywood's genius in embedding unfit programming under a mask of love and tenderness, thus tending to excuse and justify poor behavior. Remember, the CAP Entertainment Media Analysis Model is completely objective. We make no scoring allowances for Hollywood's trumped-up "messages" to excuse, or for manufacturing of justification for aberrant behavior or imagery. That objectivity is the feature of the CAP model that makes it most useful to you as a parent or grandparent -- it lets YOU decide whether a movie is acceptable.

A very well-made movie with quality acting and opulent imagery -- a truly hard influence to combat. Billy Chapel (Kevin Kosner), an aging baseball hero, finds "love" in a shack-up relationship with Jane, a woman he met while she was kicking her broken-down rental car.

Included in the possibly corruptive programming was at least 23 uses of foul language plus 25 uses of God's name in vain with and without the four letter expletive [Mark 7:20 "He went on: 'What comes out of a man is what makes him unclean." and Exod. 20:7 "You shall not misuse the name of the LORD your God, for the LORD will not hold anyone guiltless who misuses his name."].

While not a violent movie at all, it was a sexual movie built around immoral cohabitation between an unmarried heterosexual couple who engage in all manner of behavior of such a relationship, not to mention in the presence of her daughter [Gal. 5:19-21 "Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication ... and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God."] I suspect that if someone dug deep enough into the meaning of "adultery" it would be revealed that anyone who has sex with anyone other than his/her betrothed spouse is committing adultery. Also note that while the practitioners of such behavior will not inherit the kingdom of God, this is NOT the unforgivable sin. Forgiveness through repentance (stopping) of such practice and the asking for it will get it by faith in the Precious Blood of our Savior and by trust in His Sacrifice for our sakes.

So many of our visitors seem to be relying only on this Summary/Commentary for a full accounting of the subject movie. This is not possible. For the best representation of the CAP Entertainment Media Analysis Model applied to this movie, visit the Findings/Scoring section below.

FINDINGS / SCORING: For Love of the Game (1999) CAP Thermometers

    Sex/Homosexuality (S):
  • adult underwear
  • inflatable sex toy
  • vulgar gesture
  • sexual innuendo
  • necking in elevator car
  • nude woman (covered) in man's bed, ostensibly after sex
  • suggestion of immoral sex

    Drugs/Alcohol (D):

  • drunkenness

    Offense to God (O)(2):

    Murder/Suicide (M)(3):
  • none noted

    (1) As noted in CAP Special Report-001, "Investigation Area and Scoring Trend," of the six CAP Investigation Areas, Impudence/Hate was the strongest presence in all four movie classifications. It has a strong revelation about the entertainment media.

    (2) The use of the three/four letter word vocabulary without God's name in vain is incorporated into the Impudence/Hate Investigation Area. The use of God's name with or without the four letter expletive is incorporated into the Offense to God Investigation Area. There is no duplication. As required of the Holy Scriptures, unless God's name is used with reverence to His glory and praise, its use is considered in vain.

    (3) Only portrayal of successful murder or suicide are incorporated into Murder/Suicide. Portrayal of attempts to commit murder or suicide and deaths by police action or war are incorporated into Wanton Violence/Crime.
