"Black Mask" (R) -- I don't even know what the Black Mask was.

I apologize for taking so long to get this analysis online -- eleven days after viewing the movie. I do not remember much about the movie other than a few quite graphic scenes. I am thankful for the recording methodology of the CAP Entertainment Media Analysis Model. The investigator could wait a year and have forgotten everything about the movie and still be able to generate the objective numbers. I just can't give you much of a synopsis about the movie.

Most of the annotations reveal long sequences of and multiple presentations of murder and death by gunfire, acid, blows, and explosions. Makes sense -- there's nothing left of the starting 100 points in Wanton Violence/Crime and Murder/Suicide. Most of the remaining notations reveal many, many uses of foul language including the most foul of the foul words. That makes sense too since the Impudence/Hate score is zero. Oddly enough, there was relatively little sex in the movie. The notes say sadomasochism and licking kissing and picture nudity. Also revealed by the worksheets is a theme of drugs wars, the use of drugs to enhance performance, and lust for booze. Another oddity is that while there are notations of the use of God's name in vain without the four letter expletive, there are no notations of the use of God's name in vain *with* the four letter expletive -- strange for this type of movie but a good thing indeed. A mockery of Christ added to the loss of points due to the use of God's name in vain.

FINDINGS / SCORING: Black Mask (1999) CAP Thermometers

NOTE: Multiple occurrences of each item described below are likely.

Wanton Violence/Crime (W):
  • deaths by acid
  • deaths by blows
  • a pile of dead bloody bodies
  • amputated legs of a 6-year old girl
  • long gunbattles
  • bulldozer running over the legs of a man with him thrashing to free himself

  • 32 uses of the three/four letter word vocabulary

    Sex/Homosexuality (S):
  • sadomasochism

    Drugs/Alcohol (D):
    drugs to enhance performance
  • drug war theme
  • want of booze to settle nerves

    Offense to God (O)(2):
  • mockery of Christ
  • 8 uses of God's name in vain without the four letter expletive

    Murder/Suicide (M)(3):
  • many, many murders by gunfire, blows, acid, explosion, and tossed disks, many with spurting blood

    (1) As noted in CAP Special Report-001, "Investigation Area and Scoring Trend," of the six CAP Investigation Areas, Impudence/Hate was the strongest presence in all four movie classifications. It has a strong revelation about the entertainment media.

    (2) The use of the three/four letter word vocabulary without God's name in vain is incorporated into the Impudence/Hate Investigation Area. The use of God's name with or without the four letter expletive is incorporated into the Offense to God Investigation Area. There is no duplication. As required of the Holy Scriptures, unless God's name is used with reverence to His glory and praise, its use is considered in vain.

    (3) Only portrayal of successful murder or suicide are incorporated into Murder/Suicide. Portrayal of attempts to commit murder or suicide and deaths by police action or war are incorporated into Wanton Violence/Crime.
