TRAPPED (R) -- a vulgar movie in both language and sex. Production: Mandolin Entertainment, Propaganda Films, The Canton Company Distribution: Columbia Pictures, Sony Pictures Entertainment Director(s): Luis Mandoki Producer(s): Glen Ballard, Mark Canton, Neil Canton, Rick Hess, Hanno Huth, Nathan Kahane, Carsten H.W. Lorenz, Luis Mandoki, Michael McDonnell, Brian Oliver, Mimi Polk, Tanna Thompson Written by/Screenplay: Greg Iles (novel & screenplay) Cinematography/Camera: Frederick Elmes, Piotr Sobocinski Music: John Ottman Film Editing: Gerald B. Greenberg Casting: Louis DiGiaimo Production Design: Richard Sylbert Art Direction: William Heslup ![]() An habitual kidnapping team terrorize Dr. Will Jennings (Stuart Townsend) and his family -- the fifth episode of cowardice of the kidnapping team Joe Hickey, (Kevin Bacon), Cheryl Hickey (Courtney Love) and Marvin Pool (Pruitt Taylor Vince). The focus of their cowardice is 6 year old Abigail Jennings (Dakota Fanning). Or so says Joe. Joe rather has intentions also for Karen Jennings (Charlize Theron). Whatever the intentions or focus, they are all unclean and ignoble. $250,000 and revenge. In this movie with a list of producers longer than the key cast we see cause for the expression "Too many cooks spoil the broth" in this predictable parent power film changed at the last moment into a child abduction film. Dr. Jennings is a noted and gifted anesthesiologist, responsible for a new and world-changing treatment of violent patients, a break-though blamed as the cause of death of the Hickey's little girl. Ah! The plot thickens. Is it money or revenge that drives the Hickeys? They claimed to have been successful at four other child abductions simply because of their threats to come back and kill the returned child if the parents squeal. But is it true that the Hickeys abducted four other children or are they just saying that to bolster their "threat-ability" for the Jennings? All might have gone as planned except for one major set-back. Abby suffers asthma. The Hickeys did not know this when they abducted her. Now the child is less of a leverage tool and more of a liability to the abductors. She may die in captivity because of her asthma. One can find it hard to imagine how movies can change the course of standards established over time, but they can. I'll bet there will be more 6 year olds drinking coffee now that coffee is said, by the movie, to be an aid in reducing the severity of asthma attacks, now that coffee has been changed from jitter juice to a medicine. "Mom, I just can't get started until I've had my coffee." And yes, there will be 6 year olds seeing this movie. Of the hundreds of R-rated films I have analyzed, only two that I can remember did not have underage kids in the audience. If you do take your kids to see Trapped because you can't find or afford a babysitter (not that it is fit for adults anyway), know this. It is a vulgar movie in both language and sex. "Bad-boy" Bacon and Theron demonstrate forced sexual performance including oral sex though genitals are not seen, at least not yet. Bacon fondles Theron. Theron [unwillingly] submits and slices Bacon's member with a scalpel which is portrayed as flash images of a bloody member. Yes, this is graphic description. And as graphic as it is it is still incomplete. But that is what you will get if you go to see this movie and not in just text. You need to know this. The MPAA and the advertisers either won't or can't tell you these things. In addition to these sexual vulgarities and others, the use of the most foul of the foul words out-numbers by a factor of four the uses of all others of the three/four letter word vocabulary combined [Prov. 22:11, Col. 3:8, Prov. 8:13, Ps. 12:8. Eph. 5:4]. Together they blast your earpans at nearly one per minute. No wonder why the expression of desensitization "They're just words" was born [Jude 4]. God's name in vain is used multiple times both with and without the four letter expletive [Deut. 5:11]. Threats to a child's life are used to manipulate [Matt. 18:10, Matt. 25:40, Matt. 10:42, Luke 17:2]. And the "Don't make me..." threats are used often, as if the wrongdoing is the victim's fault. A woman is brutalized and terrorized. A challenged man is set to murder a child. The listing in the Findings/Scoring section will provide the assaults on morality and decency noted. Of late some of our visitors have sent email that is so uninformed that I feel it appropriate to insert a reminder that the Summary/Commentary section is precisely that -- a summary in commentary format. It can be, and sometimes is, subjective. I can essentially say anything I want in it. Though not an issue of subjectivity, the Summary/Commentary section also provides application of His Word to observed behaviors and imagery. However, the Findings/Scoring section is about as sterile and objective as any human assessment system can be. It is completely objective to His Word and is insulated from my personal opinions. The Findings/Scoring section could not possibly care less whether I like a movie or not. It is the Findings/Scoring section to which you should look for your comparative tools. Since the CAP analysis model is founded in the teachings and expectations of Jesus Christ it is Rock-solid and does not change with the tides of modern morality. The findings are precisely that -- findings -- and would not be there if there if the specified behavior or programming were not present. The scoring is completely driven by movie content, not my opinion. And since the investigation standards for the scoring are the teachings and expectations of Jesus Christ, the scoring is reliable and consistent, indeed, Rock-solid. The integrity and reliability of the scoring of a 1990 movie is a great as that for a 2050 movie. If some of you want better CAP scores for movies, clean up the movies. SCRIPTURAL APPLICATION(S) If needed to focus or fortify, applicable text is underlined or bracketed [ ]. If you wish to have full context available, the Blue Letter Bible is a convenient source. If you use the Blue Letter Bible, a new window will open. Close it to return here or use "Window" in your browser's menu bar to alternate between the CAP page and the Blue Letter Bible page. *******Food for Daily Thought******* As always, it is best to refer to the Findings/Scoring section -- the heart of the CAP analysis model -- for the most complete assessment possible of this movie. |

| NOTE: The CAP Analysis Model makes no scoring allowances for trumped-up "messages" to excuse or for manufacturing of justification for aberrant behavior or imagery, or for camouflaging such ignominy with "redeeming" programming. Disguising sinful behavior in a theme plot does not excuse the sinful behavior of either the one who is drawing pleasure or example from the sinful display or the practitioners demonstrating the sinful behavior. This is NOT a movie review service. It is a movie analysis service to parents and grandparents to tell them the truth about movies using the Truth. |
| "There are some in the entertainment industry who maintain that 1) violent programming is harmless because no studies exist that prove a connection between violent entertainment and aggressive behavior in children, and 2) young people know that television, movies, and video games are simply fantasy. Unfortunately, they are wrong on both accounts." And "Viewing violence may lead to real life violence." I applaud these associations for fortifying 1 Cor. 15:33. Read the rest of the story. From our nearly seven years of study, I contend that other aberrant behaviors, attitudes, and expressions can be inserted in place of "violence" in that statement. Our Director - Child Psychology Support, a licensed psychologist and certified school psychologist concurs. For example, "Viewing arrogance against fair authority may lead to your kids defying you in real life." Or "Viewing sex may lead to sex in real life." Likewise and especially with impudence, hate and foul language. I further contend that any positive behavior can be inserted in place of "violence" with the same chance or likelihood of being a behavior template for the observer; of being incorporated into the behavior mechanics and/or coping skills of the observer. In choosing your entertainment, please consider carefully the "rest of the story" and our findings. |
