SUMMARY / COMMENTARY:

If Scriptural references appear, the full text appears at the end of the Summary / Commentary likely using a mix of KJV and NIV.

SUMMER CATCH (PG-13) -- a romantic episode of baseball and "babe" tryouts. Yes, it is a "R-13."

Freddie Prinze, Jr. stars as Ryan Dunne in a romantic episode of baseball and "babe" tryouts. Yes, it is a "R-13." Jessica Beil stars as Tenley Parrish, daughter of a wealthy local man (Bruce Davison) and target of Ryann's "babe" tryouts. Ryann and his father, Sean (Fred Ward) are lawn care professionals and Mr. Parrish is one of their customers. Ryann loves Tenley. Tenley loves Ryann. Mr. Parrish hates Ryann because he is poor. Mr. Parrish threatens to fire Sean and ruin his local client base. Sean tells Parrish what he can do with his lawn, surprisingly in a non-vulgar way.

Ryann pitches a 90 mile an hour left-handed hardball. But he suffered failure at Framingham State College following his mother's death. This summer, Ryann is trying for the pros by playing on the Chatham A's in the Cape Cod summer league. All the pro scouts come to watch the Chatham A's. Though Ryann flopped at Framingham, coach John Schiffner (Brian Dennehy) is willing to give Ryann a chance in view of Ryann's loss.

Christian Media News

Joining Ryann on the field are several hopefuls: a catcher who is uncomfortable with the wooden bats required by the pros; a pitcher who, in his own mind, is worth more than the $2 million the Dodgers offered him; an outfielder who comes out of the closet admitting he likes women of dimension; an infielder who ends up in the bed of the woman with whom he is staying for the summer. These five with Beil form the core group of this picture. And, of course, since this is a movie for the preteen/teen stratum, there are a few women as sexual toys for the boys [Rev. 2:20].

A Singles
Christian Network

One of the sex toys for the boys straddled Ryann's chest in a very short skirt while while pouring beer into his mouth by holding the bottle between her legs (clearly an emulation of a "golden shower" which I will not explain any further). She did the same for another of the boys, I think it was the catcher, who ended up wearing her underwear, as did Ryann after performing for him -- in a sleeping bag [Hebr. 13:4]. Another sex toy in S&M attire throws herself atop the nude but under-blanket (partially) outfielder, her bare posterior filling the screen. All for your thirteen year old (and younger) kids.

Additional ignominy mom/dad may frown upon include a sexual offer to a minor, very revealing swim wear and encouraging of immoral sex. Multiple instances of full rear nudity (some up very close) [**], stripping for show and sleeping together add to the immoral properties in this show. Drinking, drunkenness and smoking add to its influence. And foul language [Col. 3:8] rounds out the "appeal" of this movie.

As per design, this section of the report is a summary in commentary format. The Findings/Scoring section itemizes all the gory details and provides the scoring data. Please rely more on the Findings/Scoring section for the most complete representation of immoral programming in this movie for your preteens and young teens. Remember it is NOT safe anymore to just drop your kids off at the movies because the MPAA says 13 year olds are old enough (as if any age is "old enough" for this type of programming). While in 1995 14% of PG-13 movies should have been rated R, in 2000, 68% of PG-13 movies should have been rated R (see "R-13") [Eph. 4:19; Ps. 12:8].

SCRIPTURAL APPLICATION(S)
If needed to focus or fortify, applicable text is underlined or bracketed [ ]. If you wish to have full context available, the Blue Letter Bible is a convenient source. If you use the Blue Letter Bible, a new window will open. Close it to return here or use "Window" in your browser's menu bar to alternate between the CAP page and the Blue Letter Bible page.

  • Rev. 2:20 Nevertheless, I have this against you: You tolerate that woman Jezebel, who calls herself a prophetess. By her teaching she misleads my servants into sexual immorality... [Maybe "Jezebel" can be equated to modern entertainment. And this is found in the Book of Revelation -- prophecy of the end times. Are we there?]
  • Hebr. 13:4 Marriage should be honored by all, and the marriage bed kept pure, for God will judge the adulterer and all the sexually immoral.
**"Nakedness" (show of nudity) is spoken of as dark, restricted, undesirable, shameful, etc. 47 times in the KJV from Genesis to Revelation. For example, Ezek. 16:36 "Thus saith the Lord GOD; Because thy filthiness was poured out, and thy nakedness discovered through thy whoredoms with thy lovers,..." thus associating wanton nakedness with ill repute. What makes nudity okay in art if it is not okay in flesh?
  • Col. 3:8 But now ye also put off all these; anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy communication out of your mouth.
  • Eph. 4:19 Having lost all sensitivity, they have given themselves over to sensuality so as to indulge in every kind of impurity, with a continual lust for more.
  • Ps. 12:8 The wicked freely strut about [e.g., create progressively extreme vulgar and vile entertainment with impunity] when what is vile is honored among men [when enough people continue to willingly embrace it].

    *******Food for Thought*******
  • 1 Cor. 15:33 (KJV) Be not deceived: evil communications corrupt good manners. (NIV) Do not be misled: Bad company corrupts good character.
  • Jude 4 For certain men* whose condemnation was written about long ago have secretly slipped in among you. They are godless men, who change the grace of our God into a license for immorality and deny Jesus Christ our only Sovereign and Lord. [*men: anthropos {anth'-ro-pos}, generic, a human being, whether male or female]

NOTE: The CAP Analysis Model makes no scoring allowances for trumped-up "messages" to excuse or for manufacturing of justification for aberrant behavior or imagery, or for camouflaging such ignominy with "redeeming" programming. Disguising sinful behavior in a theme plot does not excuse the sinful behavior of either the one who is drawing pleasure from the sinful display or the practitioners demonstrating the sinful behavior. This is NOT a movie review service. It is a movie analysis service to parents and grandparents to tell them the truth about movies using the Truth.

"There are some in the entertainment industry who maintain that 1) violent programming is harmless because no studies exist that prove a connection between violent entertainment and aggressive behavior in children, and 2) young people know that television, movies, and video games are simply fantasy. Unfortunately, they are wrong on both accounts." And "Viewing violence may lead to real life violence." I applaud these associations for fortifying 1 Cor. 15:33. Read the rest of the story. From our five-year study, I contend that other aberrant behaviors, attitudes, and expressions can be inserted in place of "violence" in that statement. Our Director - Child Psychology Support, a licensed psychologist and certified school psychologist concurs. For example, "Viewing arrogance against fair authority may lead to your kids defying you in real life." Or "Viewing sex may lead to sex in real life." Likewise and especially with impudence, hate and foul language. I further contend that any positive behavior can be inserted in place of "violence" with the same chance or likelihood of being a behavior template for the observer; of being incorporated into the behavior mechanics and/or coping skills of the observer. In choosing your entertainment, please consider carefully the "rest of the story" and our findings.

    (1) As noted in CAP Special Report-001, "Investigation Area and Scoring Trend," of the six CAP Investigation Areas, Impudence/Hate was the strongest presence in all four movie classifications. It has a strong revelation about the entertainment media.

    (2) The use of the three/four letter word vocabulary without God's name in vain is incorporated into the Impudence/Hate Investigation Area. The use of God's name with or without the four letter expletive is incorporated into the Offense to God Investigation Area. There is no duplication.

    (3) Only portrayal of successful murder or suicide are incorporated into Murder/Suicide. Portrayal of attempts to commit murder or suicide and deaths by police action or war are incorporated into Wanton Violence/Crime.
