EXECUTIVE SUMMARY / COMMENTARY:

"She's All That" -- all that sex, all that language, all that booze, which are becoming usual for a teen flick, just like "Varsity Blues." There was no full nudity but the central male star, in the final scenes, wore a necktie, a volley ball.......and that's all. The boy was wearing these things while sitting in readiness for the commencement procession. As he arose the crowd, of course, built into a frenzy of wild cheers and aw-rights while the camera was focused on his girlfriend. In a few moments, the volley ball ended up in the hands of the girlfriend. The American entertainment industry sets yet another "good" example for graduating teens.

One scene presented a dancing sequence where the male dancer hopped up on a couch straddling a girl and making pelvic thrust movements toward her face. I didn't write this vulgar trash, folks. I just report it. As assuredly as the sun will rise tomorrow, the advertisers and the movie makers won't tell you this stuff. And I guess it must be okay that your 13 year old watches this stuff -- the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) thinks so.

"She's All That" is such a tragedy. It could have been a warm, loving and gentle romance. But n-o-o-o-o! The movie makers just HAD to put the `stuff' in it. So much so it should have been rated R (like it would have been in 1995 or 1996).

It seemed a sub-theme of this movie was underwear. It was everywhere. In an art recital. In the high school. In dancing. In bed while necking. The female swim wear left almost nothing to the imagination. Sexual innuendo saturated this movie like.......like.......like sexual innuendo in 1999 a teen movie. And, yes, the most foul of the three/four letter word vocabulary AND God's name in vain with the four letter expletive were there (not to mention the eleven times His name was used in vain without the four letter expletive).

I could keep writing about "She's All That" for ten or fifteen kilobytes but the point is made.

FINDINGS / SCORING: She's All That (1999) CAP Thermometers

Wanton Violence/Crime (W) lost intermediate level points once due to a tee shirt stating "Kill All Artists" with a semiautomatic pistol between the words. Wanton Violence/Crime lost no maximum level points.

Impudence/Hate (I)(1) lost no intermediate level points but lost maximum level points four times due to a teen drinking party with no adult supervision, a central figure portraying a theme of despicable superficiality with vengeance, and two uses of the most foul of the three/four letter word vocabulary.

Sex/Homosexuality (S) st intermediate level points six times due to exposure of female underwear in High School, inappropriate touching in High School, vulgar dancing in underwear, necking in bed in underwear, and glorification of nudity. Sex/Homosexuality lost maximum level points three times due to a long sequence of skimpy swim wear, a sequence of exposure to underwear, and a vulgar dancing in underwear sequence.

Drugs/Alcohol (D) lost intermediate level points three times due to teen drinking. Drugs/Alcohol lost maximum level points six times times due teen drinking and drunkenness.

Offense to God (O)(2) lost no intermediate level points but lost maximum level points once sue to the use of God's name in vain with the four letter expletive.

Murder/Suicide (M)(3) lost no intermediate nor maximum level points.

Other examples of entertainment ignominy, each warranting the loss of the minimum point level, included

  • sex talk in background music
  • skimpy/sensual dressing in high school
  • arrogance against parents
  • tattoo (Lev. 19:28 Do not cut your bodies for the dead or put tattoo marks on yourselves. I am the LORD.)
  • sex talk
  • exposure to adult underwear
  • suggestion by friends to commit suicide
  • sexual innuendo about sexual intercourse and erections, and sexual innuendo from adult to adolescent
  • vulgar accusation
  • sneaking to avoid parents
  • violent reaction
  • beer and whiskey being handled and served by a preteen
  • locker room scene of teens
  • forcing a preteen to look at pornography
  • placing pubic hair on a pizza
  • lies to cause hurt
  • sensual dancing
  • implied nudity

    (1) As noted in CAP Special Report-001, "Investigation Area and Scoring Trend," of the six CAP Investigation Areas, Impudence/Hate was the strongest presence in all four movie classifications. It has a strong revelation about the entertainment media.

    (2) The use of the three/four letter word vocabulary without God's name is incorporated into the Impudence/Hate Investigation Area. The use of God's name with or without the three/four letter word vocabulary is incorporated into the Offense to God Investigation Area. There is no duplication. As required of the Holy Scriptures, unless God's name is used with reverence to His glory and praise, its use is considered in vain, whether literal or euphemistic.

    (3) Only portrayal of successful murder or suicide are incorporated into Murder/Suicide. Presentation of attempts to commit murder or suicide and deaths by police action or war are incorporated into Wanton Violence/Crime.
