Cohen, John Jay Osborn, Jr. Based on Same-title Novel Cinematography/Camera: Crash Music: Austin Wintory, Dominic Miller Film Editing: Matthew Leutwyler Casting: Michael Testa, Dan Shaner Production Design: Tyler Robinson Art Direction: Wilson Peery Viewed on Image Entertainment DVD The River Why will make the most sense to anglers since the quintessential character spends 14.5 hours a day fly fishing. And to support that cinematic "livelihood" the filmmakers spend a lot of film time filming him in a river flipping a fly rod back and forth. There is some quite beautiful Oregon scenery if this film is shot in Oregon. Whether it is Oregon or not, some attractive shots of the countryside are presented. Too bad the story and the talents of the star character couldn't match the splendor of the scenery. The writers do seem to grasp a lot to feed the cinematic flow with seemingly disconnected material. For example, what does intercourse have to do with fishing? Ever wonder why modern teens seem to have so much trouble controlling their urges nowadays? [1 Thess. 4:1 - 5, Hebr. 13:4] Well!? It's okay for teens to watch intercourse - to participate in it by imagination -- in the movies! At least it is according to the MPAA. I wonder what the angels for the underage viewer will have to say to God about people who put this stuff before our youth? [Matt. 18:10] Henning Hale "H20" Orviston (William Hurt) is first an expert fisherman and then a writer. Henning is a rather gruff and stuffy fellow indeed. His wife, "Ma" (Kathleen Quinlan) is a polar opposite to Henning. Ma uses bait to fish. Dad is a fly fisherman. Almost always the two are arguing but their loyalty to the family and each other is immeasurable. Living with Henning and Ma are their two sons, preteen Billy Bob (Gattlin Griffith) and quintessential character, Augustine (Zach Giford, a Tom Hardy, Warrior lookalike in some view angles) who prefers "Gus" to "Augustine." Due to parental oppressive restrictions and control and infernal friction, adult Augustine finds it impossible to live at home any longer. During one of the many heated discussion between mom and dad, in an adolescent rage Augustine became fed up and stormed out of his parents' home after saying intensely disrespectful things to them, calling them hateful names and destroying several of his parents' personal items, including the prized possession of Nijinski, a stuffed "superfish" that brought Henning and Ma together. After years of being taught how to be an expert angler, Augustine has the skills to use them for a livelihood. Moving into a shed which Augustine calls his cabin, Augustine ekes out a meager living while fishing 14.5 hours per day. Then one day as he strolls the banks of a river Augustine spies a nude girl, Eddy (Amber Heard) diving into the river. From there you are probably quite capable of filling in the blanks. Following are brief discussions of the content per individual content investigation area. As always the Findings section of this report, the heart of the CAP Analysis Model, is the best source for discovering the full accounting of the content of this film. Wanton Violence/Crime (W) - 83 out of 100 Ma fires a shotgun at a dog attacking Billy Bob and the crimes of littering and polluting are the only issues that apply to this content investigation area. Impudence/Hate (I) - Zero out of 100 Nine times someone spews profanity. [Col. 3:8, Eph. 5:4, Prov. 4:24] But the strongest content that drains the starting 100 points in this content investigation area is the impudence and hatred Augustine shows against his parents. [Exod. 20:12] Additional matters of impudence/hate are shown in the listing in the Findings section. Sexual Immorality (S) - 46 out of 100 As mentioned in the summary this film presents heterosexual intercourse and all that Hollywood claims comes with intercourse. Such content has come to be expected of a PG-13 nowadays. Gender-specific parts are not seen but enough skin is shown to make it obvious the making-out participants are nude. [Hebr. 13:4] If you do not know, the MPAA does not have the authority to say it is or is not okay for your teens to watch this sort of immorality in and as entertainment. You, mom/dad, and only you do. There is no law, tort, statute, dictum, command, moral edict, ordinance or any other authority that says you must let your 13 year old and older kids watch a PG-13 film. There is more to the content found by this investigation area and it listed in the Findings section. Drugs/Alcohol (D) - Zero out of 100 Drinking and smoking are frequent in this film. Frequent enough to make the magnitude or total envelope of the content applicable to this investigation area equivalent to the same in many R-rated films. In addition to God warning us of consuming substances in type or quantity that damage our bodies, the American College of Physicians have echoed God. A 2002 study by the American College of Physicians (ACP) revealed that adolescent exposure to drinking in and as entertainment undeniably leads to abuse of alcohol among underage viewers. The finding entitled Relation Between Parental Restrictions on Movies and Adolescent Use of Tobacco and Alcohol reports that of 4544 youths from grades 5 through 8 of fifteen Vermont and New Hampshire middle schools (90% of the youths were under fourteen years old) only 16% were completely restricted in their entertainment diets. Within the ACP study population, the prevalence of having tried alcohol without parental knowledge was There is nothing to say that viewing smoking in and as entertainment does not carry the same danger of influence as viewing drinking. Actually, the same matter of behavior influence applies to any behavior demonstrated in and as entertainment, including good behavior. Offense to God (O) - 19 out of 100 Four times someone abuses God's name, three of the four times with the four letter expletive. [Deut. 5:11] There is also a generous dollop of smooth talk [Rom. 16:18} and vain philosophy [Col. 2:8] to confuse and counterfeit God's Word and Will, especially about our souls. Murder/Suicide (M) - 100 out of 100 No murders or suicides were noted in the entire 98.3 minutes of programming. SCRIPTURAL APPLICATION(S) If needed to focus or fortify, applicable text is underlined or bracketed [ ] or bold. CHAPTER/VERSE As always, it is best to refer to the Findings/Scoring section -- the heart of the CAP analysis model -- for the most complete assessment possible of this movie. |

| There are some in the entertainment industry who maintain that 1) violent programming is harmless because no studies exist that prove a connection between violent entertainment and aggressive behavior in children, and 2) young people know that television, movies, and video games are simply fantasy. Unfortunately, they are wrong on both accounts." And "Viewing violence may lead to real life violence." I applaud these associations for fortifying 1 Cor. 15:33. Read the rest of the story. From our years of study, I contend that other aberrant behaviors, attitudes, and expressions can be inserted in place of "violence" in that statement. Our Director - Child Psychology Support, a licensed psychologist and certified school psychologist concurs. For example, "Viewing arrogance against fair authority may lead to your kids defying you in real life." Or "Viewing sex may lead to sex in real life." Likewise and especially with impudence, hate and foul language. I further contend that any positive behavior can be inserted in place of "violence" with the same chance or likelihood of being a behavior template for the observer; of being incorporated into the behavior mechanics and/or coping skills of the observer. In choosing your entertainment, please consider carefully the "rest of the story" and our findings. |
