Dennis Washington Art Direction: Thomas T. Taylor Viewed At: Driftwood Theater 6 Well, here it is a full four months after opening day and I finally get this analysis report to you. That makes this analysis about as useful as a dead house plant except to you who wait for a film to come out on video which, by the way, is today, July 20, 2007. CORRECTION: It is now July 23. Another three-day delay. Only when we find funding to make this a fulltime dedicated ministry will I be able to assure you of more timely analyses. Then, I will even be able to get many analyses to you before opening day since we get invitations to private screenings regularly. We received a special invitation to Premonition the week before opening day but could not afford to travel 160 miles to the screening. Waaa, waaa! :o) Linda and Jim Hanson (Sandra Bullock, Julian McMahon) are the perfect happy couple starting out in their first home to raise a family. Soon they have two lovely girls, Megan (Shyann McClure) and Bridgette (Courtney Taylor Burness). One day Sheriff Reilley (Marc Macaulay) shows up to announce to Linda that Jim was killed Wednesday (the day before) in a car wreck with a fuel truck that jackknifed at the 220 mile marker. But what is Linda to believe? On alternate days Linda sees Jim alive, even after his funeral. What's up with that? I'll not try to explain what I gathered from the film in case you want to rent this film since it came out on video today (July 20, 2007). Premonition is rated PG-13 for some violent content, disturbing images, thematic material and brief language. Nothing, of course, is said about Bullock and McMahon being in bed together. Be that as it may, Premonition earned a final score of 65 which places it near the top of the scoring range earned by PG-13 films (55 to 67 out of 100) in the comparative baseline database -- only thre e points under the bottom of the scoring range for PG films (68 to 86 out of 100). Wanton Violence/Crime (W) Along with a graphic scene of death by vehicle, the images of young Bridgette falling through a glass door and of her facial lacerations are probably what most would say are the most severe matters of violence in Premonition. Flashbacks of violence, reckless driving, an explosive startle and a couple other examples of violence are responsible for the loss of nearly half of the starting 100 points in Wanton Violence/Crime. [Prov. 16:29] Impudence/Hate (I) There are seven uses of the three/four letter word vocabulary in Premonition plus one use of the most foul of the foul words. [Col. 3:8] An older sibling bossing a younger sister rather bitterly, adolescent arrogance against parental authority and rudeness in traffic are about the only matters of impudence and/or hate. However, there were enough of them to erase over half of the starting 100 points in this investigation area. [Mark 3:25] Sexual Immorality (S) Likewise losing over half of the starting 100 points in an investigation area, the Sexual Immorality investigation area lost over half of its starting 100 points due to content. Sexually immoral and/or oriented behaviors include sex talk, adult in underwear, ghosting of female anatomy through clothing, a man in a shower plus a man and a woman in the shower snuggling, and a man and woman in bed nude. Some of these behaviors are present repeatedly through the 92 minutes of film. [Gal. 5:19; Prov. 30:20] Drugs/Alcohol (D) Though the PG-13 label "warns" parents that some material may not be suitable for children under 13, the "PG-13" label automatically makes this film "fit" for anyone who can navigate a box of popcorn and a soda. At least, that is how it seems from the audiences of the hundreds of PG-13 films I've seen. There is a grave reason for me bringing this up in the Drugs/Alcohol investigation area discussion. And I am going to make a big deal (long sermon) of it. The drinking, smoking and prescription drug abuse in this film are of significant danger in this film suggested by the MPAA as being fit for the middle school age stratum. A study by the American College of Physicians (ACP revealed that adolescent exposure to drinking and smoking in and as entertainment leads to undeniable abuse of alcohol among underage kids. The finding entitled Relation Between Parental Restrictions on Movies and Adolescent Use of Tobacco and Alcohol reports that of 4544 youths from grades 5 through 8 of fifteen Vermont and New Hampshire middle schools (90% were under fourteen years old) only 16% were completely restricted from viewing R-rated movies. The researchers selected R-rated movies because they assumed R-rated movies typically present more drinking than movies of other classifications. This assumption is no longer true. The researchers were not aware of the matter of "R-13" proven by this ministry (see R-13) and four years later by Harvard University scientists (see Harvard Agrees With Us). The bottom line? The focus is the influence of adolescent exposure to drinking (and smoking) in and as entertainment is undeniable regardless of the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) classification. Within the ACP study population, the prevalence of having tried alcohol without parental knowledge was Rather revealing of the influences of the entertainment industry wouldn't you say? And emboldening children to sin with drink in and as entertainment screams of violating Luke 17:2. Even the University of Connecticut corroborates our finding and that of the ACP. [Eph. 5:18] I can add to the ACP study that reveals films which present drinking and drunkenness contribute to underage substance abuse. I submit that it is not so much the presence of alcohol and tobacco in R-rated films that embolden youth to abuse substances, but is rather the attitude typically portrayed heavily in R-rated movies and even more severely in many PG-13 movies. Our report on this, ATTITUDE: In Perspective -- Investigation Area Scoring and Trend in CAP Entertainment Industry Investigations, Special Report-001 may provide more understanding of the point. Offense to God (O) Numerous uses of God's name in vain with and without the four letter expletive [Deut. 5:11] plus adultery and suggestion of adultery [Mark 7:21] drained over 20% of the starting 100 points in this investigation area. Yes, the suggestion of a sinful behavior can be as influential as seeing a demonstration of is (acting it out on film), sometimes even more influential than the actual demonstration. Murder/Suicide (M) No murders or suicides were noted in the entire 92-minute film. SCRIPTURAL APPLICATION(S) If needed to focus or fortify, applicable text is underlined or bracketed [ ] or bold. CHAPTER/VERSE ***Selected Scriptures of Armour against the influence of the entertainment industry*** As always, it is best to refer to the Findings/Scoring section -- the heart of the CAP analysis model -- for the most complete assessment possible of this movie. |

| There are some in the entertainment industry who maintain that 1) violent programming is harmless because no studies exist that prove a connection between violent entertainment and aggressive behavior in children, and 2) young people know that television, movies, and video games are simply fantasy. Unfortunately, they are wrong on both accounts." And "Viewing violence may lead to real life violence." I applaud these associations for fortifying 1 Cor. 15:33. Read the rest of the story. From our years of study, I contend that other aberrant behaviors, attitudes, and expressions can be inserted in place of "violence" in that statement. Our Director - Child Psychology Support, a licensed psychologist and certified school psychologist concurs. For example, "Viewing arrogance against fair authority may lead to your kids defying you in real life." Or "Viewing sex may lead to sex in real life." Likewise and especially with impudence, hate and foul language. I further contend that any positive behavior can be inserted in place of "violence" with the same chance or likelihood of being a behavior template for the observer; of being incorporated into the behavior mechanics and/or coping skills of the observer. In choosing your entertainment, please consider carefully the "rest of the story" and our findings. |
