Ocean's 11 are comparable to the Dirty Dozen minus one, but these 11 are not on a military mission. This movie is a remake of the original Ocean's 11 of the 60s and it's "Rat Pack." Daniel Ocean (George Clooney) gathers his own "Rat Pack", ten additional bad guys to rob three Las Vegas casinos. Rusty Ryan (Brad Pitt) is Ocean's second in "command." Together, Ocean and Ryan gather a scurvy crew of criminals of various expertise to rob the vault common to three casinos; the MGM Grand, the Mirage and the Bellagio, all owned by Terry Benedict (Andy Garcia). Benedict is also the one who stole Ocean's wife, Tess (Julia Roberts) who was Benedict's live-in girlfriend [Gal. 5:19].

The day Ocean gets out of the North Jersey State Prison he starts planning the biggest casino heist in history: a total take of $163 million. In on the heist with Ocean and Ryan are Frank Catton (Bernie Mac), Livingston Dell (Eddie Jemison), Bashir Tarr (Don Cheadle), Linus Caldwell (Matt Damon), Saul Bloom (Carl Reiner), brothers Turk and Virgil Malloy (Scott Caan and Casey Affleck), and gymnast Yen (Shaobo Qin). All planning and staging is financed by Reuben Tishkoff (Elliot Gould), the quintessential potty-mouth in this film ... and potty-mouthed he was! [Col. 3:8] I suspect he was responsible for more than half of the total foul language in the film and most of that in just a few minutes.

There is not a whole lot to tell you about this storyline. But there is a lot to tell you about the content. There was a great of drinking with much imagery of bars and booze as would be expected of Las Vegas and casinos. Though drinking itself is not sinful, intoxication is. And if portrayal of booze and drinking (and smoking) in entertainment was not a major problem for youth, why would there be and why has there been for such a long time a push to get booze commercials off prime time television? [1Cor. 6:9-10] While there were no murders, there were many forms of threats and one graphic gunfire death at the hands of casino security. [Jonah 3:8] Also, the whole show was built around theft and planning theft [Hab. 2:9]. Further, there were at least eleven counts of successful crime. [Eccl. 8:11] Sexuality was less than would be expected of Las Vegas but present nonetheless. [Mark 7:21] Regarding foul language, Elliot Gould was exceptionally foul, whose ability to communicate seemed completely dependent on the use of God's name in vain with the four letter expletive. Such arrogant intent on disrespect of God's name hasn't likely been heard before and may never be heard again. [Deut. 5:11] I wonder if Gould (and others) knows that acting does not excuse sin, especially the sin of teaching/causing others to sin by example? [Luke 17:2] Please look to the listing in the Findings/Scoring section for the most complete information.

  • Hab. 2:9 Woe to him who builds his realm by unjust gain to set his nest on high, to escape the clutches of ruin!
  • Eccl. 8:11 When the sentence for a crime is not quickly carried out, the hearts of the people are filled with schemes to do wrong.
  • Mark 7:21 For from within, out of men's hearts, come evil thoughts, sexual immorality, ...

  • Jude 4 For certain men* whose condemnation was written about long ago have secretly slipped in among you. They are godless men, who change the grace of our God into a license for immorality and deny Jesus Christ our only Sovereign and Lord. [*men: anthropos {anth'-ro-pos}, generic, a human being, whether male or female]
  • Matt. 25:40 And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto [or for] one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto [or for] me.

NOTE: The CAP Analysis Model makes no scoring allowances for trumped-up "messages" to excuse or for manufacturing of justification for aberrant behavior or imagery, or for camouflaging such ignominy with "redeeming" programming. Disguising sinful behavior in a theme plot does not excuse the sinful behavior of either the one who is drawing pleasure from the sinful display or the practitioners demonstrating the sinful behavior. This is NOT a movie review service. It is a movie analysis service to parents and grandparents to tell them the truth about movies using the Truth.

"There are some in the entertainment industry who maintain that 1) violent programming is harmless because no studies exist that prove a connection between violent entertainment and aggressive behavior in children, and 2) young people know that television, movies, and video games are simply fantasy. Unfortunately, they are wrong on both accounts." And "Viewing violence may lead to real life violence." I applaud these associations for fortifying 1 Cor. 15:33. Read the rest of the story. From our five-year study, I contend that other aberrant behaviors, attitudes, and expressions can be inserted in place of "violence" in that statement. Our Director - Child Psychology Support, a licensed psychologist and certified school psychologist concurs. For example, "Viewing arrogance against fair authority may lead to your kids defying you in real life." Or "Viewing sex may lead to sex in real life." Likewise and especially with impudence, hate and foul language. I further contend that any positive behavior can be inserted in place of "violence" with the same chance or likelihood of being a behavior template for the observer; of being incorporated into the behavior mechanics and/or coping skills of the observer. In choosing your entertainment, please consider carefully the "rest of the story" and our findings.

    (1) As noted in CAP Special Report-001, "Investigation Area and Scoring Trend," of the six CAP Investigation Areas, Impudence/Hate was the strongest presence in all four movie classifications. It has a strong revelation about the entertainment media.

    (2) The use of the three/four letter word vocabulary without God's name in vain is incorporated into the Impudence/Hate Investigation Area. The use of God's name with or without the four letter expletive is incorporated into the Offense to God Investigation Area. There is no duplication.

    (3) Only portrayal of successful murder or suicide are incorporated into Murder/Suicide. Portrayal of attempts to commit murder or suicide and deaths by police action or war are incorporated into Wanton Violence/Crime.
