Mr. Bean's Holiday earned a CAP final score of 79 out of 100 which places this film squarely in the scoring range earned by PG films (68 to 86 out of 100) in the comparative baseline database.

The reason for earring a final score less than a score equivalent to other comparative baseline G-rated films (100 to 87 out of 100) is manifold: fighting; theft; hanging on to a moving truck; military gunfire; self-burning; assault; more. In addition a child utters the single profane word used in the whole film, there is drunkenness, a woman is used as a toy or possession, a woman wears clothing revealing excessive breast exposure, a man urinates and more. Each of these items of ignominy are not of the intensity typically used in films bearing more severe ratings but they are there nonetheless. See CAP Rule of 1000 for more information on this content loading technique. And Mr. Bean's Holiday is rated G "All ages admitted" ,,, with a suicide. A man is jilted who then jumps off a bridge into a river. Not funny.

A more complete discussion regarding the content is provided in the individual investigation area discussions below. A detailed itemization of the findings of the CAP analysis model is provided in the Findings/Scoring section of this report.

Mr. Bean (Rowan Atkinson) wins a vacation to Cannes, France to the Cannes Film Festival. On his way Bean runs into a Rube Goldberg slapstick series of mishaps and meetings. One meeting is with a young boy whose father is prevented from getting on the train with his son because of what Bean did. From there the boy ends up becoming attached to Bean as he makes his way to Cannes.

Since it has been three months since I viewed this film, this is the best I can give you regarding a Summary/Commentary. But, as usual, the listing sin the Findings/Scoring section does not depend on my memory of a film. They are recorded on special forms at the time of viewing. Following are discussions of film content revealed by the individual CAP investigation areas.

Wanton Violence/Crime (W)
Lots of slapstick comedy violence but nothing of any major concern except maybe hanging on the rear of a truck in motion, self burning to fight sleepiness, some traffic endangerments. There is a simple assault with no consequences but they who assail others are called evil by the Lord [Ps. 17:8 - 9] While there is not likely any major concern regarding the severity or intensity of each individual example of violence and/or crime, there are enough to make the magnitude of them as a whole equivalent to a few R-rated movies. See our CAP Rule of 1000 for more information on this relatively new technique of filmmakers to load kids shows. [Ps. 12:8]

Impudence/Hate (I)
In this G-rated kids show the young boy utters one of the four letter words. I wonder if the writers know about Luke 17:2. And the boy slaps Bean. Twice. [1 Peter 5:5] An instance of deceit and open urination give cause to the Impudence/Hate investigation area score of 75.

Sexual Immorality (S)
Pelvic thrusts, the use of a woman as a toy or possession, some excessive breast exposure and the use of the camera angle to force the viewer on private parts were the only instances of sexually-oriented content found. Indeed, each of these seem, on the surface, innocuous but yet they plant indelible perceptions of personal behavior, especially in the non-adult who typically cannot fully separate fantasy from reality or fully anticipate the consequences of their actions. Such skills usually don not fully develop until the early 20s.

Drugs/Alcohol (D)
Not that it is of any consequence, there is booze and drunkenness in this film for kids. The American College of Physicians find that films present drinking to the young to be a problem.

A study by the American College of Physicians (ACP) revealed that adolescent exposure to drinking and smoking in and as entertainment leads to undeniable abuse of alcohol among kids. The finding entitled Relation Between Parental Restrictions on Movies and Adolescent Use of Tobacco and Alcohol reports that of 4544 youths from grades 5 through 8 of fifteen Vermont and New Hampshire middle schools (90% were under fourteen years old) only 16% were completely restricted from viewing R-rated movies.
The researchers selected R-rated movies because they assumed R-rated movies typically present more drinking than movies of other classifications. This assumption is no longer true. The researchers were not aware of the matter of "R-13" proven by this ministry (see R-13) and four years after us by Harvard University scientists (see University of Connecticut corroborates the ACP finding. [Eph. 5:18]

Offense to God (O)
The CAP analysis model found no uses of His name in vain. No Satanism, occultism, witchcraft, false worship or idolatry or any of the other procedural criteria in the Offense to God investigation area.

Murder/Suicide (M)
While all the other investigation areas found programming of questionable content in some areas, the Murder/Suicide investigation area found one suicide. What a terrible signal to send to minor children! To kill one's self because of failed love. And the demonstration of it to be portrayed as humorous! I very seriously doubt it is funny as one is plummeting to his/her death and there is nothing one can do about it. One cannot change his/her mind once s/he has jumped. Drs. Karen Nelson, a top ten university psychology department head and Larry Gilliam, a practicing counselor with three doctorate degrees agree with me that it would be unusual for even a 16 year old to be able to fully anticipate the consequences of his/her actions. Such skills do not typically plateau until the early 20s. God warns us not to murder. [Ex 20:13] Suicide is murder of the self.

CHAPTER/VERSE

  • Ps. 17:8 - 9 Keep me as the apple of your eye; hide me in the shadow of your wings from the wicked who assail me, from my mortal enemies who surround me.
  • 1 Peter 5:5 Likewise [in humility as the elders who have charge over you], ye younger, submit yourselves unto the elder. Yea, all of you be subject one to another, and be clothed with humility: for God resisteth the proud [huperephanos {hoop-er-ay'-fan-os}: an overweening estimate of one's means or merits, despising others or even treating them with contempt, haughty], and giveth grace to the humble.
  • Eph. 5:18 Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit. [Since "drunk" is methusko {meth-oos'-ko}: to intoxicate; make drunk; to get drunk; become intoxicated, "wine" can be any intoxicating substance including illegal drugs or abuse of prescription drugs. The issue is do not abuse the body by intoxicating it [1 Cor. 6:19]. Though it is not a sin to drink, it is a sin to get drunk OR to influence to get drunk OR to drink in defiance such as underage drinking.
  • 1 Cor. 6:19 What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?
  • Ex 20:13 Thou shalt not kill. (NIV) You shall not murder.

***Selected Scriptures of Armour against the influence of the entertainment industry***
  • Jer. 37:9 This is what the LORD says: Do not deceive yourselves, thinking, 'The Babylonians [the destroyers from within] will surely leave us.' They will not!
  • Ps. 12:8 The wicked freely strut about [e.g., create progressively vile/offensive entertainment with impunity and no consequences and present it to younger and younger audiences every year] when what is vile is honored among men [when enough people continue to defend it, embrace it, enjoy it, want it, submit to it. I call attention to Ps. 12:8 to warn of the creeping desensitizing power of "entertainment."]
  • Col. 2:8 Beware lest any man [by his influence] spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ.
  • 1 Cor. 15:33 Be not deceived: evil [kakov: of a bad nature, not such as it ought to be] communications corrupt good manners.
  • Rom. 5:19 For as by one man's disobedience many were made sinners, so by the obedience of one shall many be made righteous.
  • Jude 1:4 For there are certain men* crept in unawares [secretly slipped in among us], who were before of old ordained to this condemnation [whose condemnation was written about long ago], ungodly men, turning the grace of our God into lasciviousness [a license for immorality], and denying the only Lord God, and our Lord Jesus Christ. [*men: anthropos {anth'-ro-pos}, generic, a human being, whether male or female]
  • Matt. 25:40 And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.
  • Luke 17:2 It were better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck, and he cast into the sea, than that he should offend one of these little ones. [Offend: skandalizo {skan-dal-id'-zo} - scandalize; to entice to sin; to cause a person to begin to distrust and desert one whom he ought to trust and obey; to cause to fall away.]
  • Ps. 119:133 Order my steps in thy word: and let not any iniquity have dominion over me [let no sin rule over me].
  • John 14:15 If ye love me, keep my commandments.
  • 1 Thess. 5:22 Abstain from all appearance of evil. ["Evil" includes all things that are sinful.]

There are some in the entertainment industry who maintain that 1) violent programming is harmless because no studies exist that prove a connection between violent entertainment and aggressive behavior in children, and 2) young people know that television, movies, and video games are simply fantasy. Unfortunately, they are wrong on both accounts." And "Viewing violence may lead to real life violence." I applaud these associations for fortifying 1 Cor. 15:33. Read the rest of the story. From our years of study, I contend that other aberrant behaviors, attitudes, and expressions can be inserted in place of "violence" in that statement. Our Director - Child Psychology Support, a licensed psychologist and certified school psychologist concurs. For example, "Viewing arrogance against fair authority may lead to your kids defying you in real life." Or "Viewing sex may lead to sex in real life." Likewise and especially with impudence, hate and foul language. I further contend that any positive behavior can be inserted in place of "violence" with the same chance or likelihood of being a behavior template for the observer; of being incorporated into the behavior mechanics and/or coping skills of the observer. In choosing your entertainment, please consider carefully the "rest of the story" and our findings.
