SUMMARY / COMMENTARY:

If Scriptural references appear, the full text appears at the end of the Summary / Commentary likely using a mix of KJV and NIV.

LEGALLY BLONDE (PG-13) -- definitely R-13 due mainly to language and sexual issues.

A new law has not been passed to make it legal to be blonde. Elle Woods (Reese Witherspoon), the blonde, becomes a legal eagle thus the *Legally Blonde*. Elle feels that she has a better chance getting back her preppie Harvard law school boyfriend, Senator wannabe Warner Huntington III (Matthew Davis), if she enrolls in Harvard law school, too. Even her status as Delta Nu sorority president is not enough to get him back. Nor is her wealth (rather her parents' wealth) enough. Neither is her beauty, her bubbly personality, nor her dazzling command of fashion, fabrics, grooming and general hygiene.

Thinking Warner was going to propose at a dinner date, Elle prepares all her assets to maximize appeal. Little did Elle know that Warner, instead of proposing marriage to her dumps her in favor of a preppie Harvard law school student, snooty Vivian Kensington (Selma Blair) who is more of a match for a Senator wannabe than the flighty little girl image of Elle: "I need to marry a Jackie [Onassis], not a Marilyn [Monroe]." Also, there was much weight put in the name. A Huntington should marry a Kensington, not a Woods.

Surprisingly, Elle made it through the entrance testing with no trouble. Her GPA in fashion school was 4.0. Initially, the entrance board of Harvard questioned whether a 4.0 in fashion and grooming will meet the needs of a prestigious law school student. But once the all-male board viewed a few videos in Elle's personal portfolio, they felt compelled to compromise and make allowances.

After a confrontation with a female professor (who turns out to be her best mentor), Elle is befriended by Professor Callahan (Victor Garber) after a dazzling display of legal expertise by Elle. He invites her to be one of the elite interns for his law firm. Callahan, with the supportive exterior initially, turns out to be less than admirable. Along the way, Elle is also befriended by a real nice guy, Emmett (Luke Wilson) who is one of Callahan's key lieutenants of the firm. Paulette (Jennifer Coolidge), a spicy manicurist victimized by divorce, turns out to be quite an influence in Elle's romantic warfare. Elle doesn't do that bad of a job for Paullette either.

I'll not tell you how the relationships work out. This is a romance comedy which is as predictable as any other romance comedy. But I will tell you that the one case on which Elle was involved was rather contrived in appearance, but satisfying as entertainment. Callahan's client, Brooke, a struck-it-rich fitness expert who gets liposuction to look good, is accused of killing her much older husband for money. One of the key witnesses, a gay gardener and his unwitting boyfriend ends up proving ... I need to stop giving up so much of the plot. Just let me tell you Elle uses her vast command of haircare to win the case. The typical lauding and grandeur follow.

Issues that may and probably will make mom and dad squirm on the edge of their seats, in addition to the splattering of foul language [Titus 2:6-8], include a great deal of sexual issues [Rev. 2:20]: dressing to maximize the female form and/or skin exposure; ghosting of female anatomy through thin clothing; girls wearing only skimpy underwear; many sexual inferences, innuendo and comments (some quite vulgar); admissions of immoral sexual behavior; a long classroom discussion of sexual body fluids. And there are many displays and comments of homosexuality and lesbianism, mostly lesbianism [1Cor. 6:9-10; Rom. 1:26-27]. While no acts of blatant sexual behavior were noted of those portraying homosexual characters, such "mentioning" of them serves more to desensitize us even more to the sin of homosexuality with each "mention."

If needed to focus or fortify, applicable text is underlined or bracketed [ ].
  • Titus 2:6-8 Similarly, encourage the young men to be self-controlled. In everything set them an example by doing what is good. In your teaching show integrity, seriousness and soundness of speech that cannot be condemned, so that those who oppose you may be ashamed because they have nothing bad to say about us.
  • Rev. 2:20 Nevertheless, I have this against you: You tolerate that woman Jezebel, who calls herself a prophetess. By her teaching she misleads my servants into sexual immorality... [This applies to sexually immoral men as well. Tolerating Jezebel is another way to say tolerating more and more sexual impurity each year. This verse is found in the Book of Revelation which is prophecy of the end times. Are we there?]
  • 1Cor. 6:9-10 Do you not know that the wicked will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor male prostitutes nor homosexual offenders nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God.
  • Rom. 1:26-27 For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature: And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompense of their error which was meet.

    *******Food for Thought*******
  • 1 Cor. 15:33 (KJV) Be not deceived: evil communications corrupt good manners. (NIV) Do not be misled: Bad company corrupts good character.
  • Jude 4 For certain men* whose condemnation was written about long ago have secretly slipped in among you. They are godless men, who change the grace of our God into a license for immorality and deny Jesus Christ our only Sovereign and Lord. [*men: anthropos {anth'-ro-pos}, generic, a human being, whether male or female]

NOTE: The CAP Analysis Model makes no scoring allowances for trumped-up "messages" to excuse or for manufacturing of justification for aberrant behavior or imagery, or for camouflaging such ignominy with "redeeming" programming. Disguising sinful behavior in a theme plot does not excuse the sinful behavior of either the one who is drawing pleasure from the sinful display or the practitioners demonstrating the sinful behavior. This is NOT a movie review service. It is a movie analysis service to parents and grandparents to tell them the truth about movies using the Truth.

"There are some in the entertainment industry who maintain that 1) violent programming is harmless because no studies exist that prove a connection between violent entertainment and aggressive behavior in children, and 2) young people know that television, movies, and video games are simply fantasy. Unfortunately, they are wrong on both accounts." And "Viewing violence may lead to real life violence." I aplaud these associations for fortifying 1 Cor. 15:33. Read the rest of the story. From our five-year study, I contend that other aberrant behaviors, attitudes, and expressions can be inserted in place of "violence" in that statement. Our Director - Child Psychology Support, a licensed psychologist and certified school psychologist concurs. For example, "Viewing arrogance against fair authority may lead to your kids defying you in real life." Or "Viewing sex may lead to sex in real life." Likewise and especially with impudence, hate and foul language. I further contend that any positive behavior can be inserted in place of "violence" with the same chance or likelihood of being a behavior template for the observer; of being incorporated into the behavior mechanics and/or coping skills of the observer. In choosing your entertainment, please consider carefully the "rest of the story" and our findings.

    (1) As noted in CAP Special Report-001, "Investigation Area and Scoring Trend," of the six CAP Investigation Areas, Impudence/Hate was the strongest presence in all four movie classifications. It has a strong revelation about the entertainment media.

    (2) The use of the three/four letter word vocabulary without God's name in vain is incorporated into the Impudence/Hate Investigation Area. The use of God's name with or without the four letter expletive is incorporated into the Offense to God Investigation Area. There is no duplication.

    (3) Only portrayal of successful murder or suicide are incorporated into Murder/Suicide. Portrayal of attempts to commit murder or suicide and deaths by police action or war are incorporated into Wanton Violence/Crime.
