SUMMARY / COMMENTARY:

If Scriptural references appear, the full text appears at the end of the Summary / Commentary likely using a mix of KJV and NIV.

DR. DOLITTLE 2 (PG) -- Lots of humor. Much of it toilet humor ... and some warm moments.

Lots of humor. Much of it toilet humor such as a dog licking himself and a rat asking another rat to lick his posterior, or humor sexual in nature or topic such as speaking of intercourse, lust or conquest. Lots of subtle hints and references. But it actually has a plot and some warm moments.

Dr. John Dolittle (Eddie Murphy) again talks with animals. And I have no idea whether talking animals is a bad influence or a sin. The only thing I can find is that God gave us the planet and all that is on it, including the animals and gave us dominion over them [Gen. 1:28-30]. We are to be good stewards of the animals, which He placed to serve us and our needs, but never are we to be servants of or equals with animals. But this is a fantasy movie. Why can't the animals talk? I can't see any harm in it, but there may be. You tell me.

The movie begins with Dolittle being hurried through a typical day at his animal clinic where the animals are provided not only veterinary services but animal group therapy. A group of homeless dogs have their self-esteem boosted by Dolittle as he reminds them of their importance as individuals and their potential for being a house dog. One dog, in the middle of licking himself, was asked to be a watchdog but was rejected because the requirements of the adopters included "no [blank] licking." What an obvious programming maneuver! And yes, there is foul and sometimes vulgar language in this PG [Col. 3:8]. What would one expect from an Eddie Murphy flick?

Arriving home, Dolittle is anxious to have a family celebration of the 16th birthday of his daughter, Charisse (Raven-Symone). But Charisse has plans -- a date. Dad says no. Mom (Kristen Wilson) says lighten up. [Rom. 16:17] Charisse, victimized by the polarization caused by dad's meat-n-veggies discipline and mom's cake-n-ice cream discipline, displays defiance and rebellion [Jer. 5:6]. Not a good example for young girls. But after the sin of rebellion and defiance was enjoyed, Charisse complies and all looks well for the family get-together, especially since Charisse had invited her date to join the family in her birthday celebration. Without dad's knowledge or approval, of course. There is more fur flying among the humans than the animals.

As another example of Hollywood's infatuation with digestive processes and reproductive anatomy in "children's" programming, when Charisse blows out the candles, a "1" and a "6", two rats pop out of the cake, destroying it with one of the rats licking the "1" candle and the second rat telling the first to lick his posterior [Eph. 5:4].

A forest is about to be leveled by logger Joseph Potter (Jeffrey Jones). The forest animals are beside themselves in fear of losing their homes, everything to the blades of the axemen. A raccoon is dispatched by the Godfather beaver to recruit Dolittle's help in saving the forest. A slimly lawyer (Kevin Pollak) charges in court that there is nothing to be lost: that no endangered species was at risk. But Mrs. Dolittle counters that there is one Pacific Northwestern bear left in the forest and to cut it down would make extinct the Pacific Northwestern bear. Dr. Dolittle proposes to introduce the only known remaining Pacific Northwestern bear Archie, a circus performing bear into the forest. The court agrees with Dolittle that if he can get Archie to mate with the forest bear and perpetuate the species in one month (go figure), the logging would be forbidden. Now the war starts with Dolittle in command of the forest brigade.

A lot of quality performances with quality production is tainted with crude humor typical of modern entertainment. Of the performances, I would award the realism award to Raven-Symone. Her ability with facial expressions and non-verbal communication said more than her words. And Maya Dolittle (Kyla Pratt) was delightful in the too few parts she was given. *DR2* earned a CAP 68. The CAP scoring range earned by PG movies is 86 to 68. Can't cut it much closer than that. Twelve uses of the three/four letter word vocabulary [Col. 3:8]. At least ten sexual innuendo, 7 items of toilet humor [Eph. 5:4] and 8 issues of arrogance toward and/or defiance of parental authority [Is. 30:1, Eph. 6:1, Col. 3:20]. There is good stuff in it but that is your call to make if you decide to watch it. We just tell you about the "dirty underside of the car" (see the CAP home page) so you can make an informed decision for yourselves whether it is fit for your kids and/or yourself.

If needed to focus or fortify, applicable text is underlined or bracketed [ ].
  • Gen. 1:28 And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth. And God said, Behold, I have given you every herb bearing seed, which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree, in the which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be for meat. And to every beast of the earth, and to every fowl of the air, and to every thing that creepeth upon the earth, wherein there is life, I have given every green herb for meat: and it was so.
  • Col. 3:8 But now you must rid yourselves of all such things as these: anger, rage, malice, slander, and filthy language from your lips.
  • Rom. 16:17 I urge you, brothers, to watch out for those who cause divisions...
  • Jer. 5:6 Therefore a lion from the forest will attack them, a wolf from the desert will ravage them, a leopard will lie in wait near their towns to tear to pieces any who venture out, for their rebellion is great and their backslidings many. [The "lion", the "wolf" and the "leopard" can be any of the corrupting agents of the modern world, consuming the hearts of they who stray out of His Word and into their own.]
  • Eph. 5:4 Nor should there be obscenity, foolish talk or coarse joking, which are out of place, but rather thanksgiving.
  • Eph. 6:1 Children, obey your parents in the Lord: for this is right.
  • Col. 3:20 Children, obey your parents in all things: for this is well pleasing unto the Lord.
  • Is. 30:1 (KJV) Woe to the rebellious children, saith the LORD, that take counsel, but not of me; and that cover with a covering, but not of my spirit, that they may add sin to sin:

    *******Food for Thought*******
  • 1 Cor. 15:33 (KJV) Be not deceived: evil communications corrupt good manners. (NIV) Do not be misled: Bad company corrupts good character.
  • Jude 4 For certain men* whose condemnation was written about long ago have secretly slipped in among you. They are godless men, who change the grace of our God into a license for immorality and deny Jesus Christ our only Sovereign and Lord. [*men: anthropos {anth'-ro-pos}, generic, a human being, whether male or female]

As always, it is best to refer to the Findings/Scoring section -- the heart of the CAP analysis model -- for the most complete assessment possible of this movie.

NOTE: The CAP Analysis Model makes no scoring allowances for trumped-up "messages" to excuse or for manufacturing of justification for aberrant behavior or imagery, or for camouflaging such ignominy with "redeeming" programming. Disguising sinful behavior in a theme plot does not excuse the sinful behavior of either the one who is drawing pleasure from the sinful display or the practitioners demonstrating the sinful behavior. This is NOT a movie review service. It is a movie analysis service to parents and grandparents to tell them the truth about movies using the Truth.

"There are some in the entertainment industry who maintain that 1) violent programming is harmless because no studies exist that prove a connection between violent entertainment and aggressive behavior in children, and 2) young people know that television, movies, and video games are simply fantasy. Unfortunately, they are wrong on both accounts." And "Viewing violence may lead to real life violence." I aplaud these associations for fortifying 1 Cor. 15:33. Read the rest of the story. From our five-year study, I contend that other aberrant behaviors, attitudes, and expressions can be inserted in place of "violence" in that statement. Our Director - Child Psychology Support, a licensed psychologist and certified school psychologist concurs. For example, "Viewing arrogance against fair authority may lead to your kids defying you in real life." Or "Viewing sex may lead to sex in real life." Likewise and especially with impudence, hate and foul language. I further contend that any positive behavior can be inserted in place of "violence" with the same chance or likelihood of being a behavior template for the observer; of being incorporated into the behavior mechanics and/or coping skills of the observer. In choosing your entertainment, please consider carefully the "rest of the story" and our findings.

    (1) As noted in CAP Special Report-001, "Investigation Area and Scoring Trend," of the six CAP Investigation Areas, Impudence/Hate was the strongest presence in all four movie classifications. It has a strong revelation about the entertainment media.

    (2) The use of the three/four letter word vocabulary without God's name in vain is incorporated into the Impudence/Hate Investigation Area. The use of God's name with or without the four letter expletive is incorporated into the Offense to God Investigation Area. There is no duplication.

    (3) Only portrayal of successful murder or suicide are incorporated into Murder/Suicide. Portrayal of attempts to commit murder or suicide and deaths by police action or war are incorporated into Wanton Violence/Crime.
